Oct 2, 2011 12:35 PM in response to Janet Petersonby BDAqua,Hi Janet,
Whatever you do, stay away from Mackeeper...
https://discussions.apple.com/message/15421046#15421046
And hundreds more...
OK, how much free space on the Hard drive at the moment?
This free tool may speed things up...
I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

Oct 2, 2011 4:10 PM in response to Janet Petersonby Texas Mac Man,There are several things that contribute to slowness.
You have adequate RAM, but more should improve performance.
A large amount of files & folders on the Desktop can cause slowness.
An almost full hard drive can cause slowness. Your Mac needs adequate hard drive space to operate normally. How full can a drive be before it's too full? There is no hard and fast rule that says “X” amount or “%” of free drive space is needed. A low amount of RAM requires more drive space for Virtual Memory’s swap files. Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space are discussed in this link

Lack of proper maintenance can cause slowness.
