Problem with Private Frameworks folder and Adobe products

Hello everyone,

I have an unexpected problem which I created unwittingly:

I removed a frameworks folder from my Private Frameworks folder, called vmutils.framework. When I looked it up on Google, I found it was linked to Adobe functionality, and tried to drag it back into the correct location. When I drop it on to the Private Frameworks folder, I'm asked to Authenticate, but my Administrator log-in window doesn't show up (it does for everything else).

I find that my Adobe Creative Suite now won't load - I have already removed the full CS3.3 from my drive using the discs, and re-installed from scratch, but this still doesn't help.

I've also started my mac from my original disc and run a disc repair to see if that would help, still to no avail.

Most functionality on my otherwise astonishingly hardworking Powerbook is still pitch-perfect, except for this problem.

I also removed a frameworks folder called ForceFeedback.framework as this seemed to be linked to some suspicious bandwidth loss that I'd recently experienced: I haven't tried to re-instate this but have a copy of the folder on backup in case. (this is what led me to move the vmutils which also 'looked' suspicious).

Can anyone tell me how to re-instate the vmutils.framework folder? It seems as if this will need some developer-level smarts!

Very many thanks,

M

ForceFeedback appears to be part of the system but it may be interacting with a third party device (I found, for example, mention of Xbox)

Sorry, I can't help with the main issue.

With the advent of OSX, playing with system files has become very dangerous. Back in OS9 and below you could manually scan the system folder and spring clean. No longer. I would always double check with multiple references on the web before removing anything. That goes double for things by major software packages where they install things all over the place.

Get Pacifist...

then extract/install what you need from your Install Disc.

Or an Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

Thank you for replying, Limnos. I usually treat the system files with very healthy respect, I've been working on macs since 1990 so have almost grown up with them! Recently I had some bandwidth literally haemhorrage out my account before my very eyes so when I found the ForceFeedback was linked to XBox I thought it had to be that and took it out the Frameworks folder. I was far too hasty though with the vmutils, and removed it before looking it up, instead of looking it up first.

Last year I did a similar thing when I found E-Sellerate had been planted on my mac by a so-called virus scanner which I'd actually downloaded from here, the apple site. Again, in my zeal, I removed another odd file only to find it was the licencing file for my Adobe software - they were very helpful but I restored my CS3.3 by re-installing from the discs. This time it didn't work though - still waiting to hear from them too...

I will be more prudent from now on!

I'm thinking of installing OSX 10.4.3 from my original disc and then upgrading back to 10.4.11. I'd install 10.5 but it seems not to be available any more. Will keep working on the issue and post my 'fix' when I've got it sorted!

Hello BDAqua, thank you for your advice! I will look into Pacifist, but have been toying with the idea of an archive and install - I have the update that will take me from my original 10.4.3 back up to 10.4.11 in one move, so it's a good option. I appreciate the link so I can read the tech info before diving in! Most of my stuff is backed up onto a LaCie so that part is quite painless.

If I do this it will be on the weekend so I can take it slowly. I have loads of free disk space, no corruption (have kept my mac pristine and run Onyx every so often) - I think this might be the answer. I'll definitely post back once it's done to say thanks and let other folk learn from my mistake.

FANTASTIC NEWS! All working perfectly again, thanks to BDAqua. I thought I'd put time aside today to quietly work through the Archive and Install, and I'm now up and running again, perfectly. I'm absolutely THRILLED!

I made sure all my important stuff was backed up, including a fresh back up of my Home folder, and then spent some time reading the links on Archive and Install. After that I shut down, unplugged all the peripherals and restarted my powerbook, inserted the original disc, and proceeded through an Archive and Install (preserving settings). This didn't take long, well under an hour. Then I ran the Combo update (which I'd saved a copy of) to get my system back up to 10.4.11. After this, a restart, then I tried Photoshop - it loaded so I knew I was out the woods, but as I'd not been able to complete the re-install a few days ago I had to re-install my CS3. No problem at all, just relief to know all was on track. After that, all was perfect!

I thought I might have a bit of a snag with my broadband settings, but miraculously after I uninstalled the 'dongle' software (also keeping the settings) I restarted and re-installed its software; after this my connection worked first time too.

Thank you so very much for your help BDAqua, and for your advice and interest, Limnos - I didn't know about the Archive and Install feature - I'd have just done a manual back up and tried an install from an uninformed point of view, I wouldn't have known about preserving Users and Settings either. Thanks to you I was able to work through this without anxiety, and it's really gone without a single hitch. I'm so appreciative, I can't thank you enough! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Kindest regards,

Maureen
