Itunes vanishing songs

I am deleting some songs due to a hard drive failer. I send songs to the trash and they have dissapered.They are not in the trash. Any ideas, the size of the space available on the drive stays the same after I try to delete the songs. the only way I can delete the songs from the drive is to drag them to the trash myself.
