cannot make mbp sleep

Neither closing the display lid nor clicking sleep in the apple-menu will put my mbp to sleep. The sleep-light comes on (after a few seconds) but does not blink. On closing the lid there is considerable heating (there is considerable heating even with an open lid, but only in the left upper part of the keyboard).

On rebooting, the display turns on only after pressing F2.

Grateful for any advice on how to remedy this situation.

Hello Jack!

First we have to test, whether this problem is due to a software problem. Try to start in a different user account. If you have only one user on your laptop create one. Is the problem persisting? Second try to start without Login Items by holding down the Shift Key on starting. Is the problem persisting?

Now we need to know, what is taking all your CPU; open for that the Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities) and click on CPU to see what is using the biggest part of it. Post it back here. Then open the Console (Applications > Utilities) close the lid, wait some time, reopen the lid and copy the last error messages back to the forum.

Hello Rudi,

Thanks for enquiring.

Yes it was.The culprit turned out to be an application called 'Epudl' installed with the other bundled software on the Epson Software CD-ROM distributed with Epson Stylus printers and All-In-Ones. It is part of the Epson notification service, notifying you of technical updates, promotions and other offers. Disabling this service in the Preferences menu of the printer's Low Ink Reminder did the trick.
