NOOK and EPUB Help

I bought a NOOK for my 10 year old daughter because our local library system supports them (with EPUB downloads, not tech support).

I plugged the Nook into my Macbook (running Lion). The Nook shows up on my desktop, but when I try to sync the Nook either to Barnes & Noble's Nook interface or the "Overdrive" system my library uses, neither program can find the Nook.

Also, the library told me I HAD to download Adobe's Digital Editions software to manage the ebooks, but I can't seem to download it--I'm guessing because of Lion.

Has anyone had similar issues? Anyway around all of this? I tried "side loading" some PDFs into the Nook and it worked, but it looks like **** and the formatting is all wonky.

Lastly, I was able to download some EPUB books from the library but they're small files (<100kb) and I can't open them with anything.

Anyway, thanks for the help if you can lend it.

Library books must be loaded onto the Nook using Adobe Digital Editions software. The small file you downloaded is not the book, it is a link used by ADE to trigger the download onto your computer. You will find all you need to know about using ADE here:

The Nook for Mac software does not sync with your Nook. It is purely for opening and reading on your computer.

It will sync with your online Barnes & Noble library and download anything purchased from B&N.

CbtEngr has the right answer. Because of the DRM that Overdrive uses Adobe Digital Editions must be used to side-load library books onto your Nook.

Once you have this software installed you use it to open the file you downloaded from your library, which will then download the actual eBook. Then you will have to register your Nook with Adobe before it will sync with ADE.

You did everything right. The problem is usually caused by a hidden folder that came with your Nook. It is supposed to help in connecting to ADE, but results in the errror message you got. The explanation is in this thread:

Here's the important part from user "very-simple":

I have a mac too, and initially had some problems with ADE, but once I got it working right, I haven't had a problem since then (about 9 months).

In addition to deauthorizing everything and starting over, I would also suggest deleting the "Digital Editions" folder and the ".adobe_digital_editions" folder from your nook directly.

On a mac, the second folder will be hidden, because it begins with a period. Use these instructions to show all files on a mac (credit, icebike (I think!), who pointed me to it in the first place), which will let you see that folder.

Then, reauthorize everything in ADE, and ADE should recreate these folders itself. This should (hopefully) solve your problem.

I think where the hiccup happens is that B&N, as a convenience, preinstalls the Digital Editions folder on your nook. But sometimes the preinstalled folder has information that conflicts with your actual Adobe registration information, which causes it to think you're the wrong user. By letting Adobe create the files from scratch, it will create files that are in complete concordance with ADE on your computer. This is, however, merely my own hypothesis.

You may need to search the forum for the way to show hidden files, I'm using Linux and don't remember the trick on a Mac.
