New(ish) MacBook Pro. When the battery runs down it loses it's data and time and wifi password. It resets time to Jan 1, 2000 (the new Epoch?)
The time will eventually reset itself, but until it does, the bad date wreaks havoc on SSL certs.

A Battery! There is a 3 Volt coin cell that maintains those Vital Parameters in [battery-backed] Parameter RAM.
Your Mac Pro also depends on a battery.
EDIT: I see another reader has posted how to replace the rechargeable PRAM Backup battery.
Macbook Pros do have PRAM batteries too, that way you can swap main batteries without losing the PRAM settings......
Solution, don't let your battery drain completely.
Sure enough there are warnings from OS X to alert you of that fact.

I stand corrected, and have edited out the wrong information.
I was thinking they had all gone without, similar to the old iBooks, while the PowerBooks had a backup battery..
well it is weird that his "newish" MBP has a dead PRAM battery, my wife's core duo MPB PRAM battery is still goin' strong and we've worn out several main batteries.....wonder if it set dead for a long period of time.....
