USB TV tuner software for OS X?

I just bought a USB TV tuner, and right now I have to boot my Mac Pro into boot camp in order to use it. Is there some kind of software for OS X that I can use so that I don't have to do that?

EDIT: I found EyeTV, but I would rather have something that is free. I don't want to pay $80 just to not have to reboot to watch TV on my Mac.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.1), Windows 7 dual-boot

Short answer: no.

The software would be specific to the specific model of USB tuner you have. The EyeTV software would only work with Elgato's tuners (or if you were lucky, you somehow got a clone of a Elgato unit. Not very likely.)

So if the manufacturer of your tuner doesn't offer OSX versions of their software, there's nothing you can do with that model. Sell it and buy one of the Elgato units (which will come with EyeTV.)

Twonky works with a lot of USB Tuner's http://www.twonkyvision.de/ and is for free.

Elgato's EyeConnect server and EyeTV software will also support a broad band of USB Tuners but will cost money.

There are also different other solutions working with a lot of USB TV tuner's.

PS ... The correct marked answer was definitively the wrong answer.

That's not correct.

1) The Elgato eyeConnect supports a broad band of USB tuners.

My bad. You are correct that there are non Elgato tuners on the compatible list for EyeTV. So let me modify by saying that if the OP's tuner is not on the list, then there's probably not much he can do.

Well, at this point it doesn't seem to be worth the trouble for me to either find a free one or pay for EyeTV (my tuner is on the list)...

@Doug: To play Devil's Advocate, is it not worth $80 for the time you waste to reboot the Mac? With "free", you get what you pay for.

... I guess I will just have to reboot a lot (which I do anyway, as I use a lot of Windows apps).

Well, if you're in Windows "a lot", then having the tuner work in Windows would seem to be more desireable than having it work in OSX. 😉 Me personally, I built a cheap Windows box to be my TV and DVR so that I don't have to worry about an app crashing taking out my TV (or vice versa.)

@Lupunus: it is a shame that the forum software won't let one change the correct answer once marked. <:-(

I'm in Windows a lot, but I'm in OS X more. And as for the forum software not letting me change the correct answer, I totally agree with you.

There is some wisdom in what Asatoran says about building your own system ...

I build my own desktops/towers for these reasons:

  • Much much (yes, that IS a valid technical term) space to work inside the case
  • CPU upgrades at will, provided BIOS upgrades can be found
  • Add RAM to ridiculous levels cheaply (if you select the right motherboard)
  • Install SLI graphics cards (cards that are designed to share the workload for faster processing)
  • Enough in/out fans to avert most any heating issues
  • Swap hard disks, RAID hard disks, install as many disks as the power supply allows and disk bays allow

Granted, I usually stop at 1 internal disk and "average" graphics cards, but I know how to make a killer system if I need to.
