No keyboard repeat

I just updated to Lion.

I have a bluetooth keyboard. I've set keyboard repeat rate to FAST and the delay to SHORT. In certain applications (eg Word and TextEdit) no characters will repeat except for the punctuation ones. In Firefox only certain alpha keys will repeat (a,b,c,e,i,l.n,o,s,u,y,z) as well as the punctutation ones and the arrow keys, space bar, return key, delete key, etc. These keys also work in Word and TextEdit.

I can't be 100% sure it worked before but seems probable, especially as the keys work in some apps.

Yikes.

Apple calls this Character Picker and it's new with Lion:

Character picker

Accessing accented characters in OS X Lion is a breeze. Just hold down the letter and a dialog appears listing all alternative and accented characters.

To force key-repeat back:

Open Terminal.app and enter the following command:

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool false

Reboot your Mac.
