I have unwanted items (icons) in my menu bar like the Canon scanner icon. It drives me unnecessarily crazy. How do I get rid of them?
I tried command clicking to remove with no luck.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
Open System Preferences and click on the items that have icons in the menu bar. Uncheck the box in each item's preferences that says "Show status in menu bar."
Your Canon scanner icon may be there because it is set to open when you boot. System Preferences>Accounts>Startup Items. If it is there select it and hit the minus sign. What happens when you click on the icon? have you tried to darg the icon out of the menu bar when holding down the command key?
I have turned it off in the login/startup items. It is still there after logging out and restarting.
Pesky bugger won't go away.
Alas, I have fremoved the bugger!
You have to actually delete the item from the login list - not just check the minus sign.
