Since it wasn't specified during the announcement and is still in Beta, no-one here can answer that.
Voice recognition is most likely chip-based, not software-based.
Yes, know now that it is a hardware-dependent feature.
The information on Apple's web site for that feature say iPhone 4S only. It's a bit vague, though, and could possibly refer only to the beta and not a total ruling out of future possibilities. We'll have to wait and see if Siri is ever made available on other iOS devices. I'd doubt that it will but we can hope; I'd love to have it on my iPad 2, probably the only other iOS device right now with the processing power to run Siri.
Regards.

Then how did Siri work on the iphone 3GS and 4 before Apple bought it?
Why don't you tell us?
I have no idea HOW Siri works, but the Siri app works just fine on my iPhone 3GS. As does the competing app from Nuance.
The Siri app available previously it was far more limited in its functionalty than the new product announced today. The new app obviously will require more processing power and hence probably wouldn't run, or at least run effectively, on slower hardware.
And of course Apple's in the business of selling hardware, and providing features only available with new hardware is a way to get people to update.
Regards.
I meant does it require hardware support or entirely done through software? I'm guessing the app just accesses a chip on the PCB, or if it functions entirely from the CPU will the new app require the new CPU?
I didn't mean for you to explain how voice recognition works. 🙂
Apple do like saying things wont work on older hardware, when in fact it would!! Just look at iTunes, its their way of forcing upgrades.
As Lawrence Finch says it worked on the 3GS and 4 before Apple bought it, now they have they can make it NOT work
@Dave Sawyer, just how much processing power does voice recognition and an internet search need? more than an iphone 4 can offer, i think not
The new feature was introduced as part of the iOS 5 presentation. It requires no special hardware. The phone samples audio through the speaker, applies a filter, computes a fast-fourier transform, matches the phoneme fingerprints versus a disctionary, applies some post hoc heuristics, and formulates a query that is sent to a server. It's rather standard voice recognition.
I just opened my Siri app on my iPhone 4 and it displayed the following message:
"I've been replaced! The new Siri is even smarter and better-looking than me, and waiting for you on the iPhone 4S. I'll be leaving for home Oct 15th.".
According to the event video it is still in beta...
I just discovered Siri no longer works at all on my 3GS. Fortunately, Dragon Go! works just fine.
Apple and their Forced upgrades, just noticed they now only sell the iPhone 4 in an 8gb version
When do we think Siri is going to be integrated into iMac and MacBooks?
Nobody knows, or even if it will be at all.
