How do I unmask passwords?

How doyou unmask passwords. My mail account was set up so long ago we have lost the password. Is there a way to dothis?

iMAC8,1, Mac OS X (10.6.5)

Reset with the mail service (gmail, yahoo, etc) then key in the new password into Apple mail.
