Trouble connecting to network printer with new 10.7 Mac mini

I just installed a new Mini running Lion. When I added a network printer (Xerox Phaser 5550N), which is running as an Appletalk printer, the printer added successfully, using the IP protocol (since Appletalk is no longer available in 10.7). The queue sets up OK, there is communication between the Mini and the printer (I can see how much toner is left, for example), but when I attempt to print to the 5550, the document goes on "hold" with a "verification error." How do I "verify" the printer?

I've seen the verification pop-up with SMB connected printer but not IP-based connections, such as LPD or Socket. Which of the IP protocols did you use? It could be worth deleting the current queue and adding it again, this time using a different IP protocol.

This was not a popup; it appeared directly in the queue. I'm using IPP (I'm pretty sure that's what it is. The box is at work and I'm home right now).

Okay. IPP can be a tough setup with some printers. So when you get back to work I suggest you look at deleting this queue and adding it again, this time selecting "HP Jetdirect-Socket" as the IP protocol.

PAHU, thanks so much. I never would have thought of applying an HP protocol to a Xerox printer, but it worked just fine.

Good to read you got it working Jon. HP designed the protocol but just about every brand of network printer supports it. The HP protocol is also used as a default on Windows, known as RAW Port 9100.
