There are 3 people on my family plan and we are all eligible for upgrades. I need to get 3 iPhone 4S's. Will I be able to pre-order all 3 at once next Friday? What is the best way to do this?
Call Apple or your carrier and ask.
Well what was it like for the iPhone 4?
I had two family plan iPhones (a v2 and 3GS) and was able to upgrade both phones to an iPhone 4 at the same time.
However not too long after my order was accepted Apple stated one per account, though my order was still fulfilled, so the answer is "contact your carrier."
Calling Apple is not going to get you very far. At least if you call the Apple Store. They will tell you to monitor http://www.apple.com and all your answers will appear there.
I would not even bother calling the carrier. I would assume that the folks at AT&T "know nothing".
I've called the Apple Store, believe me. My plan is to monitor Apple.com every day through Thursday. Then wake up Friday, look at Apple.com and if I still have questions, I'm going to call my local Apple Store.

OK so I ended up calling Apple and AT&T. Apple told me that pre-orders will only allow you to pre-order 1 phone and no more. I asked if I would be able to buy more than one in line, they said yes and that I will be able to buy 2. So I plan on pre-ordering one and get the other 2 in line.
I am not the account holder, so in order for me to get 2 other phones for my parents, I have to have the account holder add me as an authorized user over the phone, and not online. Then I need to bring all of the account info to the store and bring photo ID for myself. Then I can buy 2. And I will wait to have them activated so my parents can do that themselves. And AT&T said they will only let you pre-order 1 iPhone through them aswell.
And there is also a new AppleCare option, AppleCare+. It is like the current AppleCare except that you have to but it when you buy the phone and it will help cover user damage. So if you drop your phone, it will now be covered. All you have to do is pay an extra $50, in addition to the $100 AppleCare+, and they will give you a new phone. So you will not have to pay full price. And they allow up to 2 replacements.

Yup, and it starts at 12:01 AM Pacific. I will be pre-ordering 1 from Apple and going to an Apple store to pick up 2 more.

I'm a bit confused here. Even though I have a family plan with 3 lines (all iPhone 3GS), I would only be able to pre-order 1 iPhone 4S online!?!? I'm the account holder btw. Also, I can't pre-order through the ATT's website and only through Apple's?

My understanding is that you can only pre-order 1 iPhone 4S through Apple. I am fairly sure, not completely, that you would be able to pre-order another one with a different credit card. Also, AT&T will be accepting pre-orders as well. If you can just go to a store and do it there, I would suggest that. That seems to be the easiest and clearest solution at this point.
When I spoke with ATT this afternoon the rep didn't say anything about a one phone limit when I discussed preordering two phones for my wife and myself.
Apple told me I could only pre-order one. However, they did not do a good job at being specific. They should have told me it was only one for each order, not one per account.
I was able to buy 2 - but I had to make 2 separate transactions at the apple store (we have AT&T family plan).
I ordered the 1st with my wife's phone # and then went in and ordered mine. I got the 1st confirmation e-mail in 5 min. The 2nd came over 12 hours later.
I sweated the 2nd phone a bit - even calling the Apple Help line (not so much help...)
I preordered two on AT&T...I had to do one at a time. 😉
