Unable to Link Keynote Remote devices in Keynote. Any advice?

I am trying to get Keynote Remote and Keynote (iWork '09) to connect in order to remotely control my presentations. I have reviewed a number of discussion entires, but none seem to highlight the problem I am seeing.

I am unable to get ANY devices to list as remote for Keynote, I follow the steps EXACTLY as described by Apple and nothing appears in the list in Keynote to link to. I have tried using both Bluetooth and WiFi. Have used an iPod an an iPhone 4, both using the latest version of iOS (4.3.5); I am running Snow Leopard (OS-X 10.6.8, with no outstanding updates!)

This just does not work!!
