Is there any way how to send SMS instead of iMessage? I wont to use iMessage a lot because lot of my friends have iPhone. However, my wife has iPhone too but without data plan. When she is at home or at work, whe's connected via Wi-Fi and she can receive iMessage. But when she is shopping and has no wi-fi, I need to send SMS. At that time, my iPhone is still remembering that I can send the iMessage. How can I choose that I want to sent SMS (just one SMS)?

P.S.: Please, don't tell me to post this to Dev forum. I tried but I cannot login to the forum. I'm logged in to Apple dev pages, but when I clic on "Forum" it doesn't work (don't know why)...

iPhone 4, iOS 4.3.4

Unfortunately, the Developer Forum is the only place you can ask this question. Anyone here who does know the answer is bound by the NDA and can't discuss it with you. Sorry.

Mm, I see. I would delete this post, but have no idea how...:-/

I'm just curious---what is the Developer forum? And what is an NDA and why can't something be discussed? I'm not familiar with this at all. Thanks.

iOS 5 is developer only until October 12th.

You need to seek help in the developer forum, since they are the only ones who have and you must be a developer since you also have it.

The beta iOS 5 was released to registered developers only.  If you have it, you got it illicitly.  "NDA" means a "Non-Disclosure Agreement", that all developers who received the beta had to accept.

Simple. Some people get from Apple, Beta version of Software to test until the software is officially issued.  For this people there is a Developer Forum which they can reach with a password and for a certain time. Ther Forum is obviously neede to exchange opinions and help how to improve the software and avoid possible bugs or defects and give suggestions-

To receive the Beta and become a Developer (or BetaTester) you need to sign an NDA, Non Desclosure Agreement which forbides to give out any kind of information about the matter.

In the specific case of iOS5 you can get all the info which are officially published by Apple but nothing about anything else.  I'm not sure if the NDA remains still in force also after the official issue of the software ( for instance to spread info about problems during the testing which have or have not got a solution) but if a were a Developer I would avoid also to publish this kind of information.

Very interesting--thank you. I have been an Apple user since 1985 and I never knew about this. Thanks much for the explanation!

I read on the internet that the message app will deliver an SMS if the person you are trying to send the message does not have an iPhone running iOS 5. The system recognizes if the phone number has iOS 5.

You have to go to the setting menu, under messages and activate this function.

    Hope this helps.

It is not a separate document, but it is in Paragraph 4 - Confidentiality, and 5 - Nondisclosure and Nonuse of Apple Confidential Information of the terms and conditions you agreed to when you signed up as a Developer, and you should have had a copy emailed to you when you registered.

The terms are posted on the developer web site.

If you decide to send a text to your wife and she cannot receive it as an iMessage, it will automatically be sent as an SMS message. Go to your Messages setting and you will see the option of "Send as SMS". Make sure its on. Also, below that is "Receive At". Make sure your wife has her apple id and her phone # filled out in there and you're set.

From what I've experienced, if you turn on the option "send as SMS", it gives you the option that when you send iMessage and don't get the delivered message, you can "click" on that message and choose "send as SMS". However, it is not done automaticaly...

How can you have an iPhone with no data plan when Verizon and AT&T say it is a manditory feature for that phone.

Becouse I'm not from the USA. I'm from Czech Republic. Here, we can buy iPhone with no data plan and no contract...

Here are wi-fi almost everywhere so the data plan is really not that important for some people:)
