How to send SMS rather then iMessage on iOS 5

Is there any way how to send SMS instead of iMessage? I wont to use iMessage a lot because lot of my friends have iPhone. However, my wife has iPhone too but without data plan. When she is at home or at work, whe's connected via Wi-Fi and she can receive iMessage. But when she is shopping and has no wi-fi, I need to send SMS. At that time, my iPhone is still remembering that I can send the iMessage. How can I choose that I want to sent SMS (just one SMS)?

P.S.: Please, don't tell me to post this to Dev forum. I tried but I cannot login to the forum. I'm logged in to Apple dev pages, but when I clic on "Forum" it doesn't work (don't know why)...

Simple. Some people get from Apple, Beta version of Software to test until the software is officially issued. For this people there is a Developer Forum which they can reach with a password and for a certain time. Ther Forum is obviously neede to exchange opinions and help how to improve the software and avoid possible bugs or defects and give suggestions-

To receive the Beta and become a Developer (or BetaTester) you need to sign an NDA, Non Desclosure Agreement which forbides to give out any kind of information about the matter.

In the specific case of iOS5 you can get all the info which are officially published by Apple but nothing about anything else. I'm not sure if the NDA remains still in force also after the official issue of the software ( for instance to spread info about problems during the testing which have or have not got a solution) but if a were a Developer I would avoid also to publish this kind of information.

I read on the internet that the message app will deliver an SMS if the person you are trying to send the message does not have an iPhone running iOS 5. The system recognizes if the phone number has iOS 5.

You have to go to the setting menu, under messages and activate this function.

Hope this helps.

Very interesting--thank you. I have been an Apple user since 1985 and I never knew about this. Thanks much for the explanation!

It is not a separate document, but it is in Paragraph 4 - Confidentiality, and 5 - Nondisclosure and Nonuse of Apple Confidential Information of the terms and conditions you agreed to when you signed up as a Developer, and you should have had a copy emailed to you when you registered.

The terms are posted on the developer web site.

If you decide to send a text to your wife and she cannot receive it as an iMessage, it will automatically be sent as an SMS message. Go to your Messages setting and you will see the option of "Send as SMS". Make sure its on. Also, below that is "Receive At". Make sure your wife has her apple id and her phone # filled out in there and you're set.
