Can't change my username to my email address

I am experiencing a problem that looks fairly unique. I've searched all around and haven't found any similar cases.

I have an iTunes account with username albedoa associated with a verified email address which I will refer to as email. I know that iCloud will require a username in email format, so I wanted to switch my username to email. In my account settings, I saw this option:

Make your Apple ID and primary email address one and the same.

Your Apple ID will be easier to remember, and your account will be easier to access and manage.

Change your Apple ID and primary email address to:

email

I clicked the Submit button, and nothing happened. I tried it in both Chrome and Safari, but each time the page would reload and my username would still be shown as albedoa. If I tried to edit the username directly to reflect email, I received the following error:

This email address is already in use or you may already have an Apple ID associated with this email address. Please try again or sign in using your existing Apple ID.

So I made a new account with the username email and associated it to the email address email (the same as the other account). However, I cannot install my purchased apps using that account because they were purchased using my other account. What is going on here? How am I to retain my purchases when iCloud is activated? I don't have a MobileMe account.

Thanks!

I tried to change my apple id to my primary email address via the apple id website. However, when I click on the submit button, nothing happened.

As suggested by one of you, I should try to retrieve/reset my password using the email address that i want to use as my apple ID.

I was able to successfully do that however when I checked my email, the email apple sent to me stated "Dear DIFFERENT NAME". I was quite surprised. I went ahead and clicked the "verify link" from apple's email and i was directed to the same apple id page wherein I was trying to merge my old apple id to my email address.

The details of the profile was someone else's (name, address, phone number, security question, etc) - it belonged to someone from another country. Can someone please help regarding this? I couldnt contact Apple as their contact center here operates only during office hours. I tried contacting the US call center but I also couldnt get through.

This doesn't solve the original poster's question for me, but it might be because I have a slightly more complex problem.

I have a @mac.com address, which is it's OWN Apple ID account. Logging in with that is a different account than the one I want to "fix". The "name only" Apple ID account has as it's primary email the @me.com version of the previously mentioned account.

When I log into the latter account, it won't even let me change the primary email address to something else, the page just keeps on loading. I wonder if it can't resolve this due to the @mac.com email account and @me.com email accounts being the same account (essentially).

I wish they'd just let us merge accounts, then this would all go away...

I also had this problem.

After signing into iTunes using the email address and password I setup on the website I was prompted to enter in my credit card information (which I thought was already on file?) or whatever...

So maybe it was sitting in a pending state until that was all finished because in the end it basically gave me a message saying "Conrats--go have fun now."

Yes, it is pretty scary. The thing about using my email when registering for an Apple ID is I should be recieving some notification right? But I've never recieved anything about this. And also, that same email is the primary email address for my current (non-email format) Apple ID.

I've changed my password to my email to a more complicated one already.

What's happening??

Got so far with dbeatle123's suggestion, but it won't let me log in with my original non email log (to select my preferred email as login) becasue it now only accepts my new email address as the AppleID.

So now I've changed my ID to an email account I dont want to use, and cant go back to the old non-email ID OR use my preferred email address as the ID.

HAvent a clue if I can access my itunes either

This is mad - Apple are just as bad as RIM right now.

I'm going to bed - hopefully someone can post a solution that works by the time I get up tomorrow.

What a load of C**P

I'm trying to change my non-email apple ID to my email and none of the methods listed above work. I seem to have two accounts and I can't verify my email in the one that uses my email as my ID because it says it is being used for another account. In my non-email ID the link that says change to using your email as your ID dosen't work.

any updates?

Here's my scenario in case it helps anyone else. Apple has recognized that MY scenario is an issue with their system (can't be sure for any others).

I have an Apple ID named "bob" and an Apple ID named "bob@mac.com". When Apple moved to "me.com" from "mac.com", they made all "mac.com" addresses also work as "me.com". The issue seems to be that at some point the "bob" account had it's Primary Email set to "bob@me.com". That means BOTH accounts have their Primary Email set to the same thing. This is not supposed to be possible and seems to wreak havoc in their login/account/email system.

In this scenario, I have the Primary and an Alternate Email on the "bob" account set to "bob@me.com" (how is that even possible? I don't know). The appleid.apple.com site will not let me delete, rename or change either of these. The page shows no errors, it just reloads when I hit the submit button. Even after they tried changing my "bob" to "bob@gmail.com" (which was the new Primary Email I gave them to try out, which they then used as the ID in an effort to fix it) it did not resolve the issue.

IF you have two accounts and one has the Primary Email set to the same as the other account's NAME or Primary Email, you are likely in the same situation as me. After a few hours with Apple Support on phone and email, they have escalated the issue and are working on it now.
