Server.app reports “Saving share point settings” for days

I changed the share points in Server.app, removing guest access from one of the share points. In the status bar at the bottom of the app, I saw the message “Saving share point settins” appear. Server.app has been working on this task for two days now, with no sign of progress. Server.app will not quit either; if I try to quit it, it returns a message telling me to wait until all transactions have finished.

Has anyone seen this? I would be grateful to learn more about this problem and how to fix it.

I ran into the same issue with 10.7.3, I let it spin for 24 hours, then I called Apple Support and they had me do the following.

Open Terminal and run the following command: sudo serveradmin stop afp

Next in Terminal run the following command: sudo serveradmin stop smb

Force quit the Server.app and then restart it.

Everything is working fine now and the fix only took a minute to perform.

I followed this same process myself, but the issue just comes back the next time I make a change. This appears to be a serious flaw with Lion Server, or with the Server app itself. I'm wishing for better days when we did everything from Server Admin. I'm not happy with the Server app at all. It complicates the process of managing the server by introducing a third app to the mix. Server Admin and Workgroup Manager are really all I ever needed for day to day management.

I did find a workaround for this, however, it may not be practical for everyone. If you move everything off of the device that you want to share, format the drive using Disk Utility, and then create the sharepoint using the Server.app it will set up the sharepoint in a couple of minutes. After the sharepoint is set up then copy all of your data back onto the drive. I had to do this with only a small amount of data (only 3TB), so like I said this may not be practical for everyone. My server has been running flawlessly for a few weeks now after I did this.
