thunderbolt to hdmi adapter

I just bought a MacBook Pro. I want to hook it up to my TV via HDMI. However, these MacBooks only have a Thunderbolt connector and the only adapter cables I can find are for the Mini Display Port. I couldn't find any definitive answers when I searched the forums. But, someone mentioned using a MDP to DVI port to connect from his MacBook's Thunderbolt to a Mac Monitor. Does this mean that the Thunderbolt port is backward compatible with MDP? Do I just purchase a MDP to HDMI cable?

Thank you,

Reighnie
