Clients that cold boot and auto login don't find Open Directory/Workgroup Manager?

I can reproduce the issue 100% of the time. We have several hundred 10.6 clients on our network that pull down WGM settings from a 10.6 server. If the clients cold boot and auto login then the client doesn't use the WGM settings. If, after a failed attempt, you log out and back in to the same machine using the same credentials that were being applied at auto login then WGM begins working fine. If you turn off auto login it works fine.

I'm not sure how to tell if the WGM server is not being seen during startup or just not given enough time during auto login to apply the settings.
