Pre-orders are delivered no later than the release date - obviously with some exceptions due to a carrier/delivery problem. Pre-orders are limited for this reason.

With the iPhone 4 pre orders there were some people that reported they got it a day or two before it hit the stores. I don't think this was the norm but it did happen. I don't think there will be the huge lines as with previous releases just for the fact that you will be able to get it from four different sources; Apple, AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint.

About two weeks after it's release my wife ordered the iPad2 for me for my birthday and it came right to my house while people were waiting at the store everyday to see if there were any shipped in the night before for them to buy. If you don't really have to have it on the exact day of the release then I would say pre order. Who knows you might get lucky!

Pre-orders are limited for a reason. Pre-orders are set to be delivered no later than the release date.

That's not quite right either, Allan. Apple doesn't turn off pre-ordering when they run out of iPhones set aside for pre-order. You can pre-order all the way up to launch day but Apple might not be able to ship your iPhone until later. You will know approximately when your iPhone will arrive before you complete your order.

I meant he might get lucky and get the phone earlier than the release date just as you did when you ordered your iPhone 4.

Is it really that important to make sure you have something on the exact day as it's released anyway? Don't get me wrong I love the equipment I have but I never once was asked if I got it on the first day. This stuff is to make our life easier and more enjoyable to live, it is not, in my opinion, a reason to live our life to have this stuff.
