It's not the shape of the phone that has changed but the placements of the buttons. On some cases it won't matter but according to otter box the ones for the 4 will not fit the 4s. I will be putting that to the test Friday but I'm not hopeful Check this link for an image of the diff. http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/10/iphone-4-cases-iphone-4s/.

According to the data I have found the changes are....... iPhone 4S has its mute button moved approximately 3 millimeters to the right, while the two volume buttons are only about 1 millimeter to the right. So if your case is not a form factor case you should be ok.

Hope this helps some

My family owns both AT&T 4 and 4S. The size of the phones is the same but the button placement is slightly different. If your iphone 4 case has one big slot for all three buttons, it will fit the 4S. If the case has two separate slots (one for the mute button and one for the two volumn buttons), the slot for the mute button will be a little off, but still functional (you can still slide the mute button).

That's not the case (no pun intended) for me. My 64gig black AT&T 4S is just slightly taller than my 32gig black AT&T 4. Because of that slight height difference my Moohie Juice Pack case does not fit and all (to the point of the phone getting stuck in it)the other hard slide-on cases that I tried would not go on easily. I gave up on trying to find a hard case because I didn't want to damage my phone (or an unpurchased case) and settled for a silicon one.

I just posted a topic regarding this of my own. I have a bumper that I used with my iPhone 4. I have since tried it on my iPhone 4s and the mute switch does not align properly. The volume buttoms seems to "work" but I can tell they don't line up properly as well. Having this experience I went to Apple's website to purchase a new bumber for my 4s and it says the bumper works for both 4 & 4s 😕 . Am I missing something. I know the cut out for the mute switch is just big enough to fit the switch itself so knowing that with the 4s AT&T model the switch has shifted, how can the bumper fit both phones? That doesn't make sense.

the new bumper must have one big cutout for all three buttons on the side to fit both 4 & 4S. The placement of the mute button on 4S is slightly lower than 4, so if your case or bumper has one big cutout on the side, it would work for both 4 & 4S. But if your old case or bumper has two separate openings, then the mute button would sit a little bit low. One of my frieds used a small drill to notch the bottom of the opening on his iphone 4 case to clear the mute button. Even if you don't adjust the opening, the mute button still functions.

So, the bottom line is, you need one big cutout to fit all three buttons on the iphone 4s.

I just went to a Verizon store and bought this Incipio case, and it fits perfectly. Note that it has a fairly large cutout for the volume and mute buttons. As others pointed out, that's probably the safest bet.

Given a choice, pick a case made for the Verizon iPhone 4 over one made for AT&T iPhone 4, since the Verizon model is a little closer to the new iPhone 4s button arrangement. Which doesn't mean an AT&T case will never work.. I just went after Verizon to be safe, after reading some opinions online.
