We have an IMac that is older but works great. All software available upgrades are installed. It won't recognize any newer devices like Ipad. Can the operating system be the problem? Can we upgrade...how?

If, as your title states, you have an Intel iMac with a Core 2 Duo processor, you can upgrade to Mac OS 10.7 Lion, although you may find Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard more compatible with your current software.
