The 2G iPod can only go as far as iOS 4.2.1. You canonly udate that that update and if you do, Apple does not support downgrading the iOS. Some users have reported increased battery drain and slow performance with updating to the iOS. It is up to you if you want the newer apps and can live with the increased battery drain/slower performance. Since there are no planne updated after 4.2.1 for the 2G iPod you are stuck wth it if you update.

I'm pretty much in the same spot as you are. One thing that helped speed up my ipod was to change a setting through itunes for my device. When I updated and put all my songs back on my device I noticed that in the get info box, the setting for remebering the last playback position was on for all my music and movies. So I just selected all of them and changed the setting to off. As soon as I did that, playing my movies and music became much faster.

I don't know if this will work for everyone but it worked for me and made my 2g ipod run a little faster after updating to 4.2.1.
