iMac mid-2011 memory upgrade

Just got a 27" i5 2.7GHz with 4GB (2x2GB) memory.

I have 2 slots free, so I'm going to buy 2x4GB from Crucial to have a total 12GB in the mac. (just £40 - compared to £160+ for the Apple optional config upgrade!)

Is there any problem having 2GB 2GB 4GB 4GB configuration ... or should all slots contain the same size?

Crucial.com tell you exactly what spec memory module to purchase, so I'm confident the speed and latency of the modules are identical.

Dear all,

Let me please re-ask the question: My 27" IMac (mid-2011) "About this Mac" shows: 4GB Installed, "

Your Mac contains 4 memory slots, each of which accepts

a 1333 MHz DDR3 memory module.

2 memory slots in use, 2 available"

Then it shows a graphic 2GB and 2GB filled boxes and below Empty....Empty two boxes.

Memory Upgrade Instructions state:

Number of memory slots 4
Base memory 4 GB (but is configured to order
Maximum memory 16 GB
Note: For the iMac (Late 2009) models, you can use 2 GB or 4 GB RAM SO-DIMMs of 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM in each slot. For the iMac (Mid 2010) and iMac (Mid 2011) models, use 2 GB or 4 GB RAM SO-DIMMs of 1333 MHz DDR3 SDRAM in each slot.

I am planning to get "4 4GB RAM modules (1 for each slot) since I realized that I could install the 2 existing 2GB modules in my wife's 21.5"(mid-2011) .

Would this be correct?

Also, Amazon and OWC websites the prices for 16GB RAM are $65, $118 while on Apple the cost is $200? Are these cheaper modules in par with the original Apple?

THANKS !

Yes.

Forget Amazon - you don't know the source and generic PC RAM seldom works.

OWC is fine, as is Crucial.

Apple doesn't make RAM; it resells bought-in RAM for a massive mark-up. I never advise anyone to buy RAM from Apple unless it's part of a custom build (but beware the new iMac 21.5" which doesn't have user-replaceable memory).

Great, Many Thanks.

One last question: Crucial recommended putting Two memory modules (8 GB each). Where would I install these "Top" or "Bottom" slots? Apple states below:

Additional notes i5 and i7 Quad Core iMac computers come with both top memory slots populated. These computers will not start up if only a single DIMM is installed in any bottom slot; these computers should operate normally with a single DIMM installed in any top slot. Core Duo iMac computers should operate normally with a single DIMM installed in any slot, top or bottom. ("Top" and "bottom" slots refer to the orientation of the slots in the pictures below. "Top" refers to the slots closest to the display; "bottom" refers to the slots closest to the stand).
