HP ScanJet 5300c Problem

I have a 5-yr old HP Scanjet 5300c. I installed the most recent driver from HP, version 3.2.1 for Mac OS 10.1x. It worked the first time I installed it, and never has since. The computer doesn't even recognize the scanner. I have checked and replaced the USB cable and the power box to the scanner seems to be working (judging by the heat). Any advice? Is it time to get a new scanner that works with OS 10.4.4? Thanks for your thoughts.

If the previous drivers worked and the failure only started with the updated HP drivers, a quick fitst thing to try is running Disk Utility> Repair Permissions on the hard drive. HP (and Adobe) installers are known to trample file permissions all over the place; running Repair Permissions after installing any third-party software that asks for an administrative password is a prudent move.

If that doesn't help, you can uninstall the HP software and reinstall the original drivers fronm the CD that came with the device. Note that HP uninstallers have a nasty habit of wiping out the entire folder the stuff to be uninstalled is in, so if you've saved any downloaded disk images of other drivers in the same folder, move that somewhere else before running the HP Uninstall software. Don't forget to run Repair Permissions after reinstalling the earlier HP drivers.

Hi JMVP, thanks.

This Just added more reasons to validate my opinion about HP making crap stuff. I detest my "top of the line" 17" HP laptop (bought for some business specific patent apps that run on Windoze) is several thousand Dollars, and does NOT have a mic built in. Talk about not making it usable without taking extras with you.

When any Windoze app actually uses the CPU more than 20% the turbines, I am sorry, the cooling fan turns on and can be heard all the way in the next room that I go to get ear plugs in. NO, I am NOT being funny. It is true.

Even a color laser I helped my SO pick out (2600n) did not work out of the box with her PC UNLESS wired by USB. (Ironically, I was able to use my PowerBook G4 wirelessly to set up the printer! - Yes, she is getting a PowerBook 15" next week).

Only device I would buy from HP is their iPaq 4700 or something (only because I assume it is better than the Dells of the world) and do not know how bad that might be. (Need it to run Anywheremap.com flying mapping GPS software).

Yes, HP is better than Dell - but that is not much of a standard to live up to.

Imran
