iCloud for Snow Leopard

So, I was under the impression that iCloud will only work with Lion and NOT with Snow Leopard. I read many discussions stating the same. However, I was at my local Apple store and this issue arose with one of the Apple employees. The employee stated I can continue using Snow Leopard and use iCloud. I asked again and he stated, "you can use iCloud with Snow Leopard".

For some reason I am doubtful, but has anyone else now if this is truc, will iCloud work with Snow Leopard?

According to the information here > http://www.apple.com/icloud/

"iCloud requires iOS 5 on iPhone 3GS or later, iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), iPad, or iPad 2; a Mac computer with OS X Lion; or a PC with Windows Vista or Windows 7 (Outlook 2007 or 2010 required for accessing contacts and calendars). Some features require a Wi-Fi connection. Some features are not available in all countries. Access to some services is limited to 10 devices."

Apparently, you are incapable of seeing the big picture behind Apple's strategies or at least denying them. Just repeating sales statements of their new OS and iCloud gives the impression that one has an option to choose from.

We never got anything for free but getting less value for less money is not an option; besides we create tons of waste of still valuable assets just because production has to come up with new systems which will be unusable in a couple of years.

Bringing in patience as a virtue about past and present is pretty pathetic and not the key how the future has been and will be created - everyone deserves what he's asking for...

Havent tried it but the only solution for Photostream that I can see to the Snow Leopard incompatibility is to PhotoStream to Windows Vista via Bootcamp and then move the photos across. Is this progress? Easier to use a USB port! The reason I havent upgraded to Lion is that I have a host of software (Photoshop Elements 4 being one of them) that are incompatible with Lion so the cost of upgrading is much higher than just the Lion upgrade. Is Apple being a bit greedy here?

Technically, no, Ronni, you didn't. You wouldn't have been able to upgrade to Lion from Leopard without going through Snow Leopard first. Or at least that's my understanding. Thus far the only advantage that I can see with Lion is real compatibility with iCloud. Everything else appears to be just window dressing. The (HUGE) disadvantage of Lion is that it's pretty incompatible with a lot of third-party programs. If you use anything other than the lastest version of the Adobe Creative Suite, DON'T upgrade to Lion.

^ I disagree, Lion is not just window dressing it is upgraded functionality, starting with native 64 bit compatibility, but that is not my reason to reply to your post.

My reason to respond is to counter your statement about the latest CS version and LIon. I have not upgraded to CS 5.5 at all AND I also have some CS4 apps running (first of all Photoshop CS4 alongside PS CS5 so I didn't have to upgrade some third party plugins), in MY experience, CS4 will run under Lion, and you do need to upgrade some Java thingy for both Cs4 apps and CS5 apps. But once you do all is well.

As far as other third party apps, not having issues there either, many apps want an upgrade fee, and most will run under Lion, but just run better with an upgrade or have extra features, therefore I only upgrade if I need the new features, so far the only thing I have lost is the ability to use MS Word 2004, but didn't use that anyway, replaced Word with Pages and NeoOffice and the other app is QuickBooks, which I hated with the passion of a thousand suns, I use CG Invoicer for billing clients, so much better.

Loving Lion here, and just need to buy some more memory and I will also be upgrading my 2007 MacbookPro (my brother updated his which is the same model and hasn't had any issues with Lion)

The ability to sync across some devices is utterly useless. My work Mac runs Snow Leopard, which is a decision that's completely out of my control. I can't sync it to the rest of my Win7 and Apple devices with iCloud, so I've got no incentive to stop using Firefox, Instapaper, Dropbox, Live Mesh, etc — on any of my devices.

To make matters worse, the work iMac is actually the newest piece of hardware in my arsenal. And already obsolete. The IT guys haven't adopted Lion because they reckon it's tested slow on our system.

iCloud is nice, but the inability to support Apple's own devices makes it one of the most idiotic services I've ever come across...

I have Icloud with Snow, and such things, as wireless syncing works, incredibly well. However, there are several things that are either non-functional, or you have to back door to save, taking more steps, and zip your documents. I spoke with Tec Support for almost 3 hours, with one discussion being Icloud. It was determined that Icloud will work, with all of its complexities and wonder, when upgraded from Snow L. to Lion. Those of us who use Quicken, (finance program) will not be able to upgrade to Lion, at this point, which makes Icloud even more frustrating. So please be careful, and read what negative impact could be on your existing programs, upgrading to Lion. To often, my mobile me opens to message center, not Icloud message center. Tec Support, advised me of the same. Not upgrading to Lion.

I am new to this game, and I appreciate all of you helping me wade through the muck.

I was told by more than one Apple Representative, both via AppleCare phone support and at an Apple Store, that iCloud would work on Snow Leopard 10.6.9. Or course 10.6.9 has not yet been released. Will it? Who knows.

I just received an email from Apple informing me that I may now migrate my MobileMe account to iCloud. In the email it states Lion as a required O.S.

So, why are Apple Representative telling users that iCloud will work with Snow Leopard? Clearly I'm not the only person who has heard this.

Contradictions abound!

Why am I not surprised. 😟

That is good to know, I have friends who use Quicken or Quick Books. At least Intuit is promising a release, in my experience several of my programs that needed Rosetta to run took much longer than the projected (promised) Lion release date, but they did eventually come out. I kept my older laptop running Snow Leopard until just this week because of that. And I still keep a back up drive loaded with Snow Leopard in case I need to access older programs. But now all of my three computers are running Lion now.
