The Lion log-in screen shows all the registered users of the machine. The user can selects his/her own account, and type in his/her password to log in. I'm the administrator of the machine and I prefer that other users do not know what other user accounts there are in the machine. Can I go back to the old mode where there is only one log-in box and the user has to fill in his/her name as well as the password?

Yes, go into your system preferences and click on the users & groups then click on login options. Make sure you click the Name and password button.

Sorry to bother you again but unfortunately it didn't actually work. I set the login option to "name and password" in the users & groups section of my system preferences, but when I restarted the machine it would still show all the user accounts with their pictures/icons. Am I missing something?

Be sure to first unlock the yellow lock tucked at the bottom-right of System Preferences before you actually try and change any of the options contained therein, since many (if not most) of them likely won't stick, if you don't.
