On my 2011 MacBook Pro (shipped with Lion) hold down Option + D during startup. This will force Internet Recovery (spinning globe logo). After a few minutes Apple Hardware Test will begin.

The following link is just flat WRONG, holding only D does nothing:

Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test

It works fine if the machine did not ship with Lion. Because your machine shipped with Lion obviously that link wouldn't work. If I recall correctly the OP's machine did not ship with Lion. He's posted many times about many things.

OK, well, one by one shall we?..

Holding D during startup DOES NOT launch AHT on a roommates 2011 MBP 2.2Ghz running 10.7.2 that shipped with 10.6.8.

That link is for "Intel-based Macs", not "Lion Shipped Macs" so obviously it DOES apply to my machine. Furthermore, if you read, it specifically states:

"2. Press and hold the D key before the gray startup screen appears. An Internet-enabled connection via Ethernet or Wi-Fi is required to use this feature. Note: Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet. These computers will start up to an Internet-based version of AHT if the hard drive does not contain AHT."

BUT in order to do this you must hold Option + D during startup, which that link does not say.

I agree. I've been having problems with my i7, August, 2011, iMac, shipped with Lion, and a screen that instantly goes completely black for no apparent reason (I can hear the computer running "under" the black screen but pushing buttons does nothing to restore the screen). I wanted to run the hardware test, but holding D did nothing. I tried over half a dozen times. With the "Option-D" keys, it worked the first time. (BTW, the hardware test revealed no problems; the black screen somehow seems connected to my external backup drive; weird.)
