How to add Picture Overlay iMovie 2011?

in the Project Settings, switch-on the advanced tools

drag pic onto video

choose 'picture in picture'

You can also use CUTAWAY instead of Picture in Picture. In this case, the photo (or video) will cover the whole screen, but the audio will continue.

You're right, we should use the HELP feature. Because your answer is inaccurate. In iMove '11 there are Project Properties, but no Project Settings. You have to go to the iMovie menu at the top of the screen and choose Preferences. The ability to turn on advanced tools is there.

I can't see advanced settings in the latest version of iMovie, no way to superimpose a photo onto a clip...

You can do a cutaway of a photo in iMovie 10.0.1, it's just a different process. While you're in your movie project, click the Import button, browse to the photo, import it. Then drag the photo to the bottom timeline. It will do the cutaway just like the old versions of iMovie.

The new process ***** but it is what it is. I use the photo cutaway from time to time and it was super easy to do it before, I would drag and drop from outside the program into the spot in iMovie. It used to be wonderful!

I should have been more specific with my question, I wasn't thining of a cutaway, rather I want to superimpose a photo on a vide clip

I wasn't even sure if this was possible to do but if I understand it correctly, sounds like it was possible to do in a earlier version of iMovie

Nick, if you want a photo to show up in place of the video but keep the video & audio going "behind" it, it's called a cutaway.

Do you want the photo to show up on just part of the screen or the whole screen? And do you want it on the whole video or just part of it?

Still trying to put a still picture over the top of a video clip....I turned on the advanced tools in preferences, but when I drag the photo over the video clip, the picture in picture option doesnt show up.....either does the cut away option. The picture simply snaps to the end of the clip.....?? I read the tutorial, but the app isnt responding like the directions suggest it should. Any ideas?

OK...the key is that the pictures NEED TO BE PULLED FROM IPHOTO......not somewhere on your hard drive.....What a pain.....why not just clarify that in the tutorial, and save folks a bunch of waisted time.?
