Dear r2retire82,

I have had my iMac for less than a year now and was referred to this forum for help. I was excited to find your post, because I thought for sure some enlightened Mac super-user would reply with some useful information! So after reading the post, I went to search for the answer!

One of the great things about Apple and their products is their friendly graphical user interface. Though like most computer systems, I am sure there is more than one way to get to the scanning function/interface versus having to install software from your scanner manufacturer.

Here is what I did to get to the scanning interface:

  1. Click on the Apple in the uppermost left-hand corner of the screen.
  2. Then click on System Preferences...
  3. Click on the Printer & Faxes icon.
  4. Then click on Print & Fax, the interface opens, simply click on the Scan button and then on the Open Scanner button.

Most likely you have found your answer by now, but just incase, I hope you find this helpful. Also, don't forget, if you use your scanner often, you can save it to the Dock by:

  1. Right clicking (if you have this option enabled) or by holding down the control key and clicking on the scanner icon located in the Dock.
  2. Click the scanner icon.
  3. Go to Option, then click on Keep in Dock.

I am sure there are other and probably more efficient ways to complete this task; however, that is what I have for the moment!

Best Regards,

~

Joshua

Bravo Joshua,

Your answer ended up helping me in a pinch and I appreciate it. I wanted to elaborate on the original posters question, as I feel others migrating from Windows to Mac may be in this same position, and i am taking the risk of assuming the lack of detail was related to the fact he/she figured iMacs had a scanning feature as part of the OS and NOT his/her printer software. The question was posted in iMac, leading me to believe this was the situation.

For future users looking this same question up, Joshuas post above will effortlessly get the job done, and also if you have installed your printer, 9/10, you'll have a printer icon on your dock below, jump into that and follow your printers prompts to get the job done.

Good Luck!

LHSW,

Thank you for the kudos!

Just an update on the second part, I think this flows a little better:

1. Right click (if you have this option enabled) or hold down the control key and click on the scanner/printer icon located in the Dock.

2. Go to Option, then click in Keep in Dock.

By saving it to your Dock, you have it readily accessible to work on that going paperless project everyone started with the first home scanner that came out 1,000 moons ago!

I have learned some interesting and helpful information from the tutorials and help files on Preview. Short version, awesome! You can scan images from a single-sided or flatbed scanner and easily drop them into a single PDF document! And that is just the begining!

Okay need sleep! Thanks again!

Sincerely,

~

Joshua

This only answered "how do I scan a document", not "how do I save it" [presumably so one can retrieve it].

My Epson XP-850 will scan the document just fine, either via Image Capture or the above noted method, however, I can't find the document as it is not where I specified it should go. Even using the magnifier in the top right hand corner [spotlight] cannot retrieve the scan.

Your problem may not be exactly the same as that of the original poster of this older thread, and it can be very confusing for everybody if we try to answer more than one question in each thread.

In order for us to give your problem our undivided attention to try to solve it, would you kindly start your own thread, describing the trouble you are having in the fullest detail, including completing your details to show what Mac or iDevice you are using, what operating system, and what version of the application in question. Please remember to post in the forum relevant to your hardware or version of OS X.

John,

If you are using the scan feature described above, there is a button at the bottom of the scan window labeled "Show Details". Selecting this will give several options before you hit the scan button, including what to name the document and where to save it.
