Are there benefits to the above question? I hate being LOCKED into anything. Like my brother asked " Why buy unlocked and go with no contract"? I really coul not give him an answer he liked the stupid SOB

The only advantage would be that you could take it to another carrier, if a comparable one exists where you are.

Be careful, however; a "no contract" phone is NOT the same as an "unlocked" phone. A No Contract phone is still locked to a carrier, you just don't need a 2 year contract.
Well one advantage would be resale value, as US carriers have so far never unlocked phones you would get more for an officially unlocked one than one locked to AT&T. That is obviously just an example as I don't know which country you are in.
Thanks for all the info. Yeah I did buy a no-contract phone. So I'm aware of the difference. Just you hear all these guys saying how nice it is to have an un-locked or jail-broken phone but they never go into the reasons, well I guess they do. I guess but I still don't se the benefit other than the ones you and others here have given.
