Q: Unable to upgrade via DVD?

If you made a backup of it to DMG or ISO, I can tell you exactly how to do it, but it requires a few things and a bit of patience.

What you need:

the DMG of the OS X version you want to install, but if you have the ISO just convert it to DMG so it can be mounted on the mac you want to use.

a spare spare hard drive that you dont mind formatting

IDE cables

a spare desktop PC with sufficent power supply requirements for the spare hard drive

Philleps screw driver.

So what you do is, turn the emac over on its screen so the user access door is facing yourself, but put a towel down first to avoid scratching the front of the computer/the screen etc..

Use the philleps screw driver to loosen the user access door enough so that it comes off and you have access to the ram and the ide cables for the DVD drive (this is being done on an ATI graphics version of the eMac)

Right infront of you, you should be able to see the grey IDE cable coming from the DVD drive, disconnect it from the drive and the Logic board so the cable is completely out.

Get the spare IDE cable I mentioned before. It should be long enough to run out of the back of the mac when its seated properly so the hard drive doesnt get crushed. Plug one end into the logic board, then the other end into the hard drive then put the hard drive on the desk and out of the way of the computer. You can now put the emac down properly but leave the cable coming out of the back to the new harddrive there and dont put the user access door on.

Next, run a power cable for the hdd from the spare desktop pc, to the hdd and plug it in. (this is because the power cable in the mac isnt long enough to reach the hard drive without leaving it under the mac to be crushed.

Turn both computers on and hold the option key while the mac starts, and select your current OSX installation and boot from it.

Mount the DMG image of the OSX installer you want to use, then open disk utility.

Format that spare drive we just connected, then click  the restore tab.

Drag the mounted DMG into the source box, then drag the new drive into the destination and click restore.

This is going to restore the installer to the new hard drive so that you can boot from it and use that as the installation media just as you would with the DVD/CD.

Once its done, go to system preferences and open "startup disk", and select the new drive and click reboot.

Run the installer as normally hopefully if all has gone as planned

Congratulations you should now have upgraded your OS.
