Help! Kernel panics on new Macbook Pro!

Hi everyone, first time posting. I'm not very OSX tech saavy as I've been a long time PC user and just recently switched over. Anyways, within a week of having my Macbook I had 3 kernel panics. I was going to post here earlier but then they seemed to stop happening and I was preoccupied with school and work so I forgot about it. My Macbook Pro is now over a month old and just recently I had another kernel panic. I'm guessing that these panics aren't going to go away on their own and that I have some hardware or software issue. Could anyone help me isolate the problem and/or help me fix it?

Thank you very much in advance.

ps- I don't know if this is relevant or may help but my last kernel panic sent this info to Apple from the crash report

Yes, reboot your computer holding the Shift key down and enter "safe mode" this disables the kext files from loading.

Run the Intego installer to uninstall their antiv-virus software

If you can't do that, then at least remove the following kext files out of your System/Library/Extensions folder

com.intego.iokit.VirusBarrierX6Service 10.6.13

com.intego.iokit.VBX6NKE 1

com.intego.iokit.BehavioralKext 1

com.intego.kext.VirusBarrier.AppBarrierKPI 10.6.13

com.intego.kext.VirusBarrierKPI 10.6.13

And also perhaps this one which I don't know about or what it belongs too if your problems continue

com.razer.driver.RazerDeathAdderDriver 3.0.0

But always try to use the uninstaller as your first choice and removing the kext files as a last resort. Most developers are good about including uninstall methods, sometimes you have to search their site hard to find the correct instructions or email them.

Your computer should work fine after this, if not come back.

If you need anti-virus software on a Mac to clean the Windows files, then install the free ClamXav as it doesn't interfere with OS X at all.

OS X doesn't need anti-virus and Apple changes things so anti-virus software breaks, better run without it or use the free ClamXav.

Hmm, are you sure? My friend bought the Intego Virus Barrier subscription and it came with 2 keys so she gave me one. We both got our Macbooks within a few weeks of each other and she hasn't had any kernel panics.

I don't have the installer anymore because I deleted it but I'll go find and re-download it and try to uninstall it just in case. Also, the Razer driver is for my mouse and I started having kernel panics before I installed it so I don't think it's that.

Thanks for your response! Will report back.

(Oh, also some additional information. Month old 15 inch 2011 Macbook Pro, Lion OSX 10.7.1, no bootcamp, and for some reason Safari always hangs on quit so I don't use it anymore but I don't know if that's related to my kernel panics.)

Oct 11, 2011 3:32 AM in response to Koalatea

I've seen other people having kernel panics with VirusBarrier on Lion, so that's the first thing you should try. Note that anti-virus software can't protect you from everything - there is currently a trojan going around that can slip past VirusBarrier (and pretty much every other AV program out there). See A new Flash Player trojan, Flashback.A seen in action! and Flashback still slipping past AV software. You'll protect yourself better by simply being aware of the threats and using your common sense, and using AV software for a back-up "safety net" at most. See my Mac Virus Guide for more information on the topic.

It's also possible VB is not the problem, and that you have a hardware problem instead. VB was not in the backtrace - meaning that it looks like the VB code was not involved in this particular crash - so that's a definite possibility. Try running Apple Hardware Test, but be aware that it cannot catch every possible hardware problem.

You really should have jumped on this problem right away rather than waiting so long. Unfortunately, if it is a hardware issue, you are probably outside the window where Apple would have just given you a new machine, so you'll be looking at a repair instead.
