Why doesn't my Canon i-Sensys LBP7750Cdn printer print colour?

I am using my LBP7750Cdn printer on an iMac running 10.6.8 and it will not print in colour. I have the latest driver UFR II 2.24 installed and selected in the printer preferences and connected using USB cable. Under the utilities tab I cannot acces any of the printer utilities, ink levels etc so I am not sure if this related to my problem. Can anyone please help, it's driving me crazy!?

Thanks Pahu. The printer doesn't work at all now since Canon asked me to delete all the drivers and install a cups driver. I have tried to reinstall the original UFR II drivers but they won't install now so it's a complete disaster. I have tried using it on 2 other Macbook pros with no success. Canon should stipulate that this printer does not work with Macs and the store won't take it back as they say it's not faulty unless Canon say so. Warning! Do not buy this printer if you want to use it on a Mac.

Well this printer does work on Mac OS X, so for the sake of other readers thinking about this model or with a printing problem what you have said is not correct. Yes, it is not working on your Mac and based on this I can understand your frustration and comments. But for the record the LBP7750Cdn is working on other Mac's, it's working fine on a few Mac's in my office running Snow Leopard and Lion, so there is no need for Canon to say it does not support OS X.

If you are still willing to try to get this printer to work then there are a couple of things I will suggest. The first is determining what options you have with the printer as this can influence what approach you take.

In my region of Oceania (Australia and New Zealand), the LBP7750Cdn supports the PCL5c and Postscript printer languages, as well as having the Canon proprietary UFR2 language. Do you know if your LBP does have Postscript support? Also, are you trying to connect to the printer via Ethernet or USB?

If the printer does have Postscript and is connected via Ethernet, then the first test you can try is creating an IP-based print queue using the HP Jetdirect-Socket protocol and selecting Generic Postscript for the driver. For the Socket protocol you only need to enter the IP address of the printer, no queue name is required. And with the Generic PS driver, the printer should let you print an A4 document from any application. So could you try this and let me know the outcome?

Thanks Pahu. I am in the UK and I know that this is a common problem with this printer. The printer as far as I know is not postscript. I did try and connect via ethernet to see if that helps but it got too complicated to do this as I am not an expert in this area. I have tried to get this to work on three different Macs with no Joy. At first it would only print black and white grainy prints but after having spent many hours talking to Canon support it now doesn't print at all. I even downloaded the CUPS driver from the Australian site but that didn't work either. I have had everything from the -50 error to 'not all software is installed' messages. I cannot now even load the UFR II driver as everytime I try to install the driver it does not appear where it should be or anywhere. A colleague did manage to get it to print on his MBP but again only in black and white. It should not be this difficult to get an off the shelf printer to work with a Mac computer when I'm told that it should. I desperately needed to get this to work as I had a very large double sided print job to get out but in the end had to print it on my inkjet at enormous cost, time and inconvenience. I appreciate your help but I don't think it will ever work. I have gone through it step by step with Canon but when we go to add printer it cannot find the right driver or software even when they say it should be there. Someone suggested I do a combo update of Snow Leopard to correct any permission issues or even go back on my time machine to a point before I loaded the software but this would not explain why it doesn't work on my other two Macs.

Thanks for the reply. The printing only in black and white would indicate that you were using the Generic PCL driver that is included with OS X. This driver only prints in black and white and by default its resolution is set to 300dpi, hence the grainy prints. The resolution can be increased to 600dpi which obviously improves the print quality, but only printing in b&w for a colour printer is not often the desired outcome.

If your printer does not support Postscript then the test using the Generic PS driver will not succeed. And neither will the CUPS PS driver from the Canon Au web site.

As for the UFR2 driver, the "software not installed" is common as OS X is not able to correctly determine what the UFR2 language is. And re not being able to load the driver, when you do try to add the printer, do you find that if you change the Print Using menu to "Select printer software" and type 7750, the "Canon LBP7750C/5460 UFR II (UK)" is listed?. If it doesn't then open Finder and navigate to HD > Library > Printers > Canon. Here should be the UFR2 folder. If you haven't tried already, you can trash this folder and the file "jp.co.canon.UFR2.BG.plist" located in HD > Library > LaunchAgents. With the folder and file trashed, empty the Trash and restart the Mac. Then you can install the UFR2 driver from Oz one more time. There is no need to install it multiple times - it does nothing. With the driver reinstalled, if you are still unable to locate the 7750C UFR2 driver then I will have to admit that this one has beaten me.
