Thunderbolt with Pegasus R4 heavily slows down boot performance of internal SSD

Yes, you got that right. We don't mind using 50% of the available space because we except the other 50% as backup this still getting used and not wasted. It all depends on how you look at it.

You will be using the software that is installed on the Pegasus R4 unit. Open box, read instructions and it's very simple. I copied software to a backup drive as well so I have it saved. You will open the Pegasus Utility and what you will do is just reformat the R4 for raid 1E(not raid 10 as i mentioned earlier...i will post my results monday but either way it will br Raid 1E or Raid 10) Follow the setup using the numbers I listed and 10 hours later after the R4 formats itself you are good to go. Yes, it really does take 10 hours. Lol

When you install lion, I will have to hunt down the links but you basically set lion to install on the R4 unit. I'm just not sure of the settings you use and the order. Try you tube "install Lion on external drive". I'm going to be transferring Lion to the R4. I haven't done it yet but when I do I will post what I did. The install is really simple. Apple has nailed the setup which is a reason I love Macs.

I will also give you a step by step for formatting the R4....it will just have to wait till Monday when I do it. I'm on my iPhone and my schedule doesn't leave me much time for my iMac till Monday. lol.

I'm ordering everything this afternoon... so in a week or so I should have everything I need!!

Sorry if I'm jumping around in topics but I have a seperate question regarding my new system. You've been so helpful that I thought that you may have some advise for me.

When I've set everything up on my new system, the RAID and everything, then it will be time to restore everything.

Way back at the beginning of the thread I mentioned that my old G5 Power Mac was dead. Well the truth is that I can make it boot by re-seating the memory cards and it will stay alive for a couple of hours if I'm lucky ( I suspect a dry joint on the mother board, but thats a mute point now)

Anyway I am wondering what is the best method of restring my data. I have all my data on an Internal SATA 400GB startup disk and then I have a time machine backup on a twin internal 400GB SATA.

I can probably keep the G5 alive long enough to restore my data but it may crash a few times.. hopefully a restore will do a checksum and it won't mean starting from the beginning.

I think that these are my options....

- When I install Osx Lion on the RAID, the installer is going to ask me if I wish to restore an account/s. If I remember correctly I can connect a eithernet cable from the G5 to the imac. Is that correct? is it a standard eithernet cable or are the Tx an Rx reversed.. my 6 years since I did this has faded my memory.

- If I restore from time machine then is it going to recognise the old 400GB drive on the G5 as a time machine backup?

- If I remember correct I can restore from the main drive directly? I wonder which is the best option?

The big question is will the restore pickup where it left off if and when my G5 crashed after a couple of hours!!

I placed an order for the LaCie 2TB Thunderbolt Drive from www.bhphoto.com. It's a pre-order that is suppose to start releasing Monday in limited quantities....since I placed an order the day before I'm sure I'm on the very bottom of the list so who knows why I will get it. No tax so it's cheaper than Apple's website and Apple has 4-6 week wait anyways. As soon as I get it and install Lion on it I will let you know and post some results. Can't wait.

Also installing Lion on my R4 in the morning. I will post those results as well.

I just read this... http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/08/lacie-little-big-disk-thunderbolt-ssd-review/ It's way over priced since you can get a Pegasus R4 in Raid 0 for $100 more. I now have the Pegasus in Raid 0 and it's a solid 450MBps write and read...more powerful than the LaCie one on write, about the same on read. Pricing just doesn't make sense or maybe they don't care about the competition's price/product?

Did you see the LaCie's 1Tb and 2TB are up $50 each in price now... I ordered one under the old pricing but who knows when I will actually get it. lol

The LaCie drive needs a external power supply to work. 😟 Maybe a car power converter would work?

Yeah, there is always something. lol I am getting 450MBps out of my R4 in Raid 0 but my network speed is maxing out at 120MBps....so not fair. lol I need a 100' Thunderbolt cable with a 5 port Thunderbolt hub... lol I know, not asking for much. lol

I got 120GB of Compact Flash cards for my camera and I connect it to a USB memory card reader... You only go as fast as the slowest link...time to ditch USB world wide. lol

Love the new FCPX and cannot wait to install it on the LaCie Drive when I get it. I plan to use the LaCie drive for Lion and Apps and FCPX work...this will be on my iMac. The R4 is on another iMac which gets most of the edting. I still edit files on the R4 but it's across the network at 120MBps... 😟 I shoot with Canon's 5D mkii and the video is pretty decent. I do plan to get a 1DX next year when it releases in March. 🙂
