iWeb will not launch on Lion

The app will actually launch, just the workspace refuses to load so I cannot see all the sites I have created. I have fixed my permissions, zapped my pram, dumped my Cashe file and the prefs for iWeb. Even nuked the Domain, all to no avail. What is even stranger is the inspector window will show up, but that is it. Any suggestions? What 3rd party app will let me go back to work here since I am reading that iWeb is now dead?

In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

For opening your domain file in Lion for the first time or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.

Just launch the applicaiton, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.

do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"

delay 1

tell application "iWeb" to activate

You can download an already compiiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.

WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder. So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

Ok, I have done this, all I get is nothing, I get the inspector, that is it, the window where all the action is simply does not exist in Lion for me, I am starting to think re-install perhaps? I even located the Domain into the documents folder, used your handy little app. The thing is, I only have 1 domain, not the multitudes of some of the power users here. Any other thoughts before I re-install this app?

Your post in another topic indicated that you tried the iPhoto fix as well as the delete pref file and cache file fix and they didn't work for you. The only other fix I can suggest is:

  1. move the domain file from your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
  2. launch iWeb, create a new test site, save the new domain file and close iWeb.
  3. go to the your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
  4. move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
  5. launch iWeb and try again.

Here is the deal, I try to create a new domain, and it will not create one, I even use that handy app to make a new domain. I am thinking now that there is another app that is interupting iWeb from proceeding, stops it each time. But I have tried to launch it without any other apps open. I guess what I have to do is create another user account and see if it will run there.

iWeb works on the iCloud,

No, iWeb does'nt work on the iCloud because iCloud does not support web hosting.

MobileMe servers are still up and running until June 30. You will have to find a new host for any websites you have thru MobileMe. After that date your websites will cease to exist. Also any MMe galleries will go away on June 30.

So if you plan on contining your websites get a new host and publish them to it soon. Then you can setup your old websites on the MMe servers to forward visitors to your new site location. How to do that can be found in Roger Wilmuts's Migrating From MobileMe.

In addition it is now confirmed that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.

On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:

Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:

◼ Password protection

◼ Blog and photo comments

◼ Blog search

◼ Hit counter

◼ MobileMe Gallery

All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.

I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken. If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.

There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows. Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.

However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone. How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.

It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.

Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

All I am doing is posting Videos for approval, will it still work then? I don't use all the stuff they say will no longer work, any of it, not a real power user by any streach, I post the video editing I do so the clients in another state can approve it, and yes I know I could use AIM with FCP, they are not the most technically enclined people on the planet.

Will what still work? To have videos online for others to view and approve you will either need to post them to a video hosting site like Vimeo and then send the url of them,to your clients or get a hosting service and create a website with your videos on it. You can even embed it into an email similar to this and send to your client. The link below will take to you the embed code to use in an email.

Yes Old Toad, in fact I did just that the other day, posted to Vimeo, it is incredibly inefficiant for the free account. All I was saying was that in the list of things that will not longer work that you provided here..

Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:

◼ Password protection

◼ Blog and photo comments

◼ Blog search

◼ Hit counter

◼ MobileMe Gallery

Does not list the fact that one could not still publish video's to the space for public viewing, hence my confusion on this matter. And yes I could also go YouTube route, same deal, I would have to pay to get anything longer than 10mins on there. My company is penny pinching right at the moment.

You can still publish videos to your website. You can drag the video into a Movie page or onto an iWeb page. However, those two methods will require the viewer to have Quicktime installed on their machine.

A better method is upload the videos to the server being used and link to them using an video player like those described in Roddy's iWeb for Musicians site. This page in particular: Movie Players and the HTML5 and Flash players described on it.
