iPod touch will not sync with iTunes 10.5
When I connect the device iTunes shows my iPod on the left, but all I get is a spinning beachball and I can't click anything in iTunes.

Assuming a PC, try here. It includes a link for XP
iTunes for Windows Vista or Windows 7: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues
Oops. Should have been more clear. I'm using Mac 10.6.8.
I don't get the spinning ball, but it certainly freezes. Stuck on step 2 of 4 of the sync. Using 10.7.1.
Maybe iTunes 10.7.1 is causing the problem since the lasted iTunes is 10.5.

I was referring to Mac OS X 10.7.1. Obviously I'm using iTunes 10.5, lllaass, but thanks for the sarcasm.
I have the same problem. iTunes 10.5 is stuck on spinning beachball every time I connect my iPod touch. Happens on both Mac OS X 10.6.8 (MacBook) and 10.5.8 (iBook). iPad synced normally. iPhoto is able to show the pictures on iPod when it's connected.
Okay, it started to work when I left the iPod connected for long enough (max. 30 minutes).
Same here, iTunes otherwise works just fine. Plug in iPod Touch (32GB from fall of last year, iOS v4.3.5), iTunes locks up and eventually crashes. iPod never chimes in that it's connected and charging and shows up in device list in iTunes, but never enters sync mode.
PowerBook G4, Mac OS 10.5.8 with 2GB of RAM. Tryed re-installing iTunes 10.5, restarting, rebuilding permissions, nothing worked. Worked just fine last week. Also links up just fine with a Windoze 7 laptop running iTunes 10.5 (but it's not one that I sync with.).
Bummer, I was really looking forward to iOS 5, but now will have no way to install it untill Apple fixes 10.5. 😟
I updated my Lion to iTunes 10.5 and my 4G iPod synced fine.
Thanks, but 10.5.8 is as far as a G4 can go, Lion isn't an option (without spending about $10,000 for all new hardware and software - new Mac, creative sweet, high end CAD, CAM, etc., etc., etc.). My configuration is suppose to be fully supported (not complaining, just trying to solve a problem). Presumably, this version of iTunes 10.5 works for vast majority of people, otherwise, Apple wouldn't have released it.
Having the same problem. Tried my iPod touch 3rd gen 32 gig on my 21.5 iMac and my Macbook (OSX 10.7.1, iTunes 10.5, iOS - latest before 5). Starts to sync then stops responding. Any ideas out there?
Same here: iPod touch 3rd gen, OS X 10.6.8, iTunes 10.5
Freezes.
I have a 2nd gen iPod touch with the latest compatible iteration of iOS (2nd gen ipod touchs can't update to the very latest version of iOS).
Syncing between my early 2008 MacBook Pro (running OS X 10.7.1) and my 2nd gen iPod touch was fine until I upgraded to the latest version of iTunes (10.5).
Now I have the same symptoms as above -- iTunes recognizes the iPod touch, starts to sync, then freezes.
Presumably this is a bug that Apple will need to address quickly.
Count me too - iTunes 10.5 on OSX 10.7.1 with an iPod Touch 4.3.5:
Itunes works normally, until I plug in my ipod, at which point I get the spinning color wheel forever.
Solution: give it time. I let my iPod sit there, frozen, eventually iTunes 10.5 started the sync process. So, if your iPhone or iPod touch freezes with iTunes 10.5, just let it sit there. Some folks have reported LONG wait times before it starts to sync, but then syncs as usual after that.
