Numbers will not sum decimals

Hi. I have been trying to sum a column of numbers in "Numbers 09" and it isn't working. It will not include in the summation any numbers that have decimals after them, i.e. it will include "49" but not "3.50". Please help!

I've started over and the problem remains.

Also, if I edit past spreadsheets, they develop the same problem.

That was how I was summing them originally, I only changed it to the + to make things as simple as possible for the example.

I was told to delete preference files but this hasn't worked either.

***New development: it adds up the decimals if i use a comma instead of a decimal place. I know this is how decimals are displayed in other languages. Is it possible my numbers has somehow formatted into another language? If so, how would i change it back?

Clearly, your system is set to use the decimal comma so the value èè.5 is not treated as a number.

Look at what you get entering the formula :

=1/2

I wish to add that =SUM (B2+B3) make no sense.

You are asking the app to sum the result of B2+B3 to nothing.

Choose one of the two logical syntaxes

=B2+B3

=SUM(B2,B3)

The first one will issue an error if one of the treated values is not a number.

The second one will just drop the non numerical value(s).

Hi there

I experienced the same problem with this!

You can correct the issue like this:

  1. Go to System Preferences --> Language and Region --> Advanced.
  2. Then under "Number separators" change the "Decimal" character to "." (me default was ","). I did the same under currency.
  3. Hit OK.
  4. Then if you exit Numbers and re-open whatever you were working on you'll be able to Sum decimals again.
