I had a similar problem and after much trial and error, I found a process that worked for me. I hope this works for you guys and best of luck!!

  1. Have Patience!!!!!!!
  2. Unplug all Apple Devices from your USB ports or any other ports
  3. Restart your computer
  4. Open up Control Panel> Programs > Uninstall Programs
  5. Click the “Publisher” to list the programs by publisher
  6. Uninstall iTunes and Restart the computer
  7. Repeat Steps 4-5 and uninstall all Apple Inc. programs (NOTE: If a program does not successfully uninstall, attempt to Repair it first)
  8. Upon uninstalling all programs by Apple Inc. restart your computer
  9. Delete all these folders:
    1. C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\
    2. C:\Windows\SysWOW64\QuickTime
    3. C:\Windows\SysWOW64\QuickTimeVR
    4. C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour
    5. C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\
    6. C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes
  10. Restart the computer
  11. Remove all Apple Inc. entries from your registry (For this step I would recommend using CCleaner or aprogram like it if you are not familiar with the RegEdit command… I personallyused CCleaner which can be downloaded for free from www.download.com)
  12. Once you have removed all registry entries from Apple Inc. restart your computer.
  13. Do one more check to ensure that all registry errors and Apple Inc. entries are removed (which include iTunes, Bonjour, QuickTime, etc)
  14. Do another quick check to make sure all Apple Inc. programs are uninstalled from the control panel, all the folders are deleted from Step 9 and the registry is clean.
  15. One more restart and then download iTunes and the installation should go through flawlessly

I hope this works for you guys!! I just downloaded iTunes 10.5 and updated my phone to iOS 5.

I figured it out, at least on my Win7-64 machine. The update process itself is conflicting with the previous version. Through control panel/programs, I removed the "Apple Software Update" application. I had to repair it first, because attempting to uninstall it gave me the exact same error message that the 10.5 install did. Once this application was removed, the 10.5 install package ran perfectly.

I received the exact same message have tried to uninstall all components but "Apple Mobile Device Support" won't uninstall. I have tried to repair and it still fails with a fatal error. When I attempt to install 10.5 I receive the above message and the install tries to reverse but does not do it successfully and iTunes will not start. I can't reinstall the old version because it find a newer version installed. Any ideas??

what a bunch of hocus pocus Apple needs to update these bugs pure and simple its Itunes not hardly worth the time or effort just to update phone sheez some of us would rather use our time for other things making a program to be the only exclusive way to load, update and maintain your phone needs to run flawlessly as there is no other way to update it Apple step up !

Been trying to sort this solid for three days now, still no iTunes ? Fails when I use iTunes installer or individual packages. Tried all the above procedures too..

I'm starting to think this might have something to do with windows ? I've always had problems with system update, that is failing also when I try to update, followed all the procedures for that too, to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated
