How to use itunes 10.5 wifi sync?

Yes, iTunes must be running on your computer to sync between any iOS device and the computer. I believe iCloud is for "syncing" between your iOS devices.

Does it re sync on a schedule or just once when you plug it in?

I was having trouble sync'ing despite having all the right check boxes checked, etc.

The fix was to restart my Airport (wireless router). (probably resets local IP's to confirm device identities, etc.)

After that both my iPad and iPhone showed up in iTunes as devices as if they were plugged in.

Now they will auto-sync if plugged in to power and connected to my home wi-fi network or I can force-sync when unplugged by going into (on the iPhone or iPad) Settings > General > iTunes Wi-Fi Sync > Sync Now.

It will sync when you are ont eh smae network and you plug it into power or when you select Sync in Settings > General (pretty sure it is here).

I think I know the answer ("upgrade"), but I'm using a G5 w/ 10.5.8 and iTunes 10.5 and iOS5. This is what I see:

With regards to my earlier post suggesting which check boxes to clear/check, the #2 (open iTunes when this iPhone is connected) is in fact not necessary. Boy was I surprised when I arrived home after dinner last night and as soon as I entered the house (within range of the wireless router) iTunes magically loaded up on all three pc's!! After clearing that check box, that behavior has stopped. So, I'll stick with suggestions #1 and #3 and add Corey's idea of rebooting the router. This probably will get most users up and running with wifi sync.

Additionally, in my experience over the last two days, the iPhone does not have to have AC power to sync wirelessly or to backup to iCloud (which it does without iTunes being loaded on the pc).

I have:

- iPhone4 with iOS5

- iTunes 10.5

- OSX 10.6.6

- Prevent iPhone from syncing automatically unchecked

- Open iTunes when phone is connected checked

The option to "Sync with this iPhone over wifi" is not showing up in the Options section of the Summary tab.

Well, it seems that Sync over Wifi has an undocumented OSX requirement of 10.6.8. An OS update resolved the missing option for me.

Apple's really been dropping the ball this week on properly documenting feature requirements.

Not funny - spent almost 3 hours trying to find out, why my iTunes Wifi-Sync checkbox was missing, although I met "all" the requirements for Wifi-Syncing Apple was mentioning: iOS5 and iTunes 10.5.

Now I realize that my Intel-MacBook won't work because i still keep OS 10.5.8 as opposed to 10.6.8 at least.

Which is what Apple should tell me, not the user forums.

I've been using Apple Hardware since my LC II, and it still is cool stuff. But their information policy gets more and more "blackboxy", "windowishy", "darksideoftheforcy"...

Wait - the computer has to be on Wi-Fi? Why? Why can't the computer be wired, if I have the Wi-Fi network on the same LAN? That's super lame.

Well, I tried syncing w/ a newer Mac, and it seems like Leopard users are left out of the party (for now?). iTunes 10.5 on Mac OS X 10.5 does not work.

What's difference does a power source make, if it's all done over WIFI? I accept that both should be sharing the same WIFI and iTunes needs to be up n running but, a power source?

It will sync over wifi automatically when you plug it into a power source.

If you do not plug it into a power source, you must initiate a sync yourself.
