WiFi sync will only work with IOS 5 installed.

This from iTunes Help

Sync your device over a Wi-Fi network

If you’re on a Wi-Fi network, and have iOS 5 installed on your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad, you can sync your device without connecting it to your computer.

You can sync your device automatically or manually over Wi-Fi. You choose your settings for Wi-Fi syncing the same way you do for syncing over a cable.

To turn on Wi-Fi syncing, your device needs to be connected to your computer. Once Wi-Fi syncing is turned on, you can sync your device whenever it’s on the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.

To sync your device over Wi-Fi:

When your device is syncing over Wi-Fi, the Sync icon User uploaded file appears in the device’s status bar. You can use your device while it’s syncing over Wi-Fi.

To update or restore your device’s software, your device needs to be connected to your computer.

You can sync a device wirelessly with multiple computers, but each type of content can be synced with only one computer.

Syncing over Wi-Fi is slower than syncing over a cable. If you connect a device to your computer while syncing over Wi-Fi, syncing continues over the cable. If you disconnect a device’s cable from a computer while syncing, syncing stops, even if Wi-Fi syncing is on.

I just updated to iTunes 10 and ios 5 hoping to be able to sync my Mac and iPad over wifi, without any cables. iTunes Help says I have to have the iPad plugged into the AC to do a sync. Can anyone confirm that it's true that I can't sync without being physically wired to something? Sure would be nice to be able to sync without wires!

Connect the iDevice and select it in iTunes.

Tick Sync over wifi connection.

Hello all...

I've experimented and found these three things need to be done to make wifi syncing work from both the phone and the pc without having to plug the phone into AC power:

1) In iTunes, Edit> Preferences> Devices Tab: uncheck Prevent iPhones, iPods and iPads from syncing automatically

2) In iTunes, with the phone connected to the pc, in the phone's Summary pane under Options, check Open iTunes when the phone is connected and.....

3) check Sync with this iPhone over wifi.

Seems (but not totally sure) #2 above is the key to making it all work. Now, when I load iTunes with the phone not connected to the pc or AC power, it pops up in iTunes under Devices and I can sync from either the pc or the phone wirelessly. I have also backed up the phone to iCloud from iTunes with the phone unplugged.

See if this stuff works and let us know.
