Updated to iTunes 10.5 today and now my Audio Playback IS TERRIBLE!!! HELP!!!!

I am a Windows XP user, have never had ANY issues with audio playback using iTunes. Today I updated to iTunes 10.5 and the audio playback through my computer speakers is TERRIBLE. It sounds like finger nails running down a chalk board. Windows Media Player and EVERY other audio-playback-capable program on my computer works fine. iTunes is my program of choice since I have everything painstakingly cataloged and tagged using iTunes. Anyone have n e advice? I truly have no idea, and I have adjusted every sound setting imagineable but it makes no difference.

Windows XP, HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad to see I'm not the only fool trying different configurations! ...lol

😁

I also loaded itunes 10.5 on an old slot1 (P3,..SL3XL)...

No luck there either...

Still got robomusic...

Got it working on my wifes Acer Aspire 5100 (running W7 64bit).

as well as my other laptop...(HP Compaq 6710b, XP sp3)...

My only concern is that we might represent such a low volume of sales to Apple, that they may never correct this.

Get a Mac is their thought process....or a newer pc.

But until they correct this ,...I for one will NOT be buying an Apple product knowing I can't share music with one of my pc's..

Just my 2 cents...

Here are the test results...

Pentium III (slot 1) - FAILED

Celeron (socket 370) - FAILED

I tested iTunes on the Celeron first. After I found that it had failed, I instantly knew that the Pentium III would also fail since both processors were made around the same time. When I tested the Pentium III, it too failed.

Audio works fine on my Dell Dimension (Pentium 4 @ 2.66 GHz) and my Acer Aspire notebook (Core Duo @ 1.6 GHz)

( windows XP SP3, AMD Athlon(TM)XP 1800+ ) = fail!!!, only stuff bought through istore plays fine.

Updated at the same time is a( Windows vista Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.4GHz ) = works fine

of course my girlfriend's crappy music is on the second P.C.. Anyway both our Ipods 4 were synced after the update on our respective computer and both work correctly.

If the CPU type (AMD vs. Intel) is not the root cause, then what?

The age of the system?

CPUs and motherboards produced before a specific year?

I've read of users on Win7 affected by the issue, so I doubt the issue is the OS, but most affected users do seem to have older systems.

Ah. I think I've got it: single-core, 32-bit, processor architecture.

That must be the common thread between all those affected.

contour_man, was that Dell Dimension (the Pentium 4), 32-bit or 64-bit?

Oct 17, 2011 7:49 PM in response to ÐeadRunner

Dell Dimension is running 32-bit Windows XP, SP3. Processor is not capable of the 64 bit architecture.

Funny you mentioned this since I was researching the same thing earlier this evening. I didn't want to post that information right away since the Dell is working perfectly AND someone already mentioned that they were having the same problem on a Windows 7 64-bit system.

But it does seem to be IA-32 related, which is what all the AMD XP processors are.

I wonder if the early Pentium 4's (Willamette) are affected. My Pentium 4 is a Northwood.

Seems that most of the folks here and on simmilar threads that are having the same MP3 audio problems after updating to 10.5 are using windows XP like I am, also same thing happens with iTunes radio and unable to play movies (MPEG-4 Video) that have been in my library prior to the update. I have updated iTunes on another laptop (HP AMD Athlon II P340 Dual-Core 2.2 GHz 64bit windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1) and it was able to import MP3's and play them using iTunes with no problem. Also able to convert the files to AAC with no problem.

Problem with:

XP Home Edition 2002 Service Pack 3

mobile AMD Athlon XP-M (LV) 2200+ 1.26 GHz

SOLVED !

shin_shin is right ! It´s the SSE2/SSE3 Standards compliant that are causing this error with older PC hardware, specially:

These CPUs implemented IA-32 after SSE2 was developed, but did not implement SSE2:

AMD CPUs prior to Athlon 64, including all Socket A-based CPUs; Intel CPUs prior to Pentium 4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VIA_C3VIA C3;Transmeta Crusoe.

Everything works fine after following the downgrade instructions posted by

MercuryComet.

Thanks man ! You made my day !
