Updated to iTunes 10.5 today and now my Audio Playback IS TERRIBLE!!! HELP!!!!

I am a Windows XP user, have never had ANY issues with audio playback using iTunes. Today I updated to iTunes 10.5 and the audio playback through my computer speakers is TERRIBLE. It sounds like finger nails running down a chalk board. Windows Media Player and EVERY other audio-playback-capable program on my computer works fine. iTunes is my program of choice since I have everything painstakingly cataloged and tagged using iTunes. Anyone have n e advice? I truly have no idea, and I have adjusted every sound setting imagineable but it makes no difference.

Windows XP, HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What RL_UK said is kind of scary! It's hard to belive that they are unaware of this problem. Maybe the individual that mention it earlier in thread is right, it could be that we just don't generate enough profit for them to be concerned. If thats the case does anyone know how I can get the money out of my account? It's only 30 bucks, but 30 bucks is 30 bucks. It's kind of weird that we're on day 14 of these posts and they haven't even acknowledged that there is a problem.

Same problems here. Main computer with AMD processor & XP has the playback issue. Second computer with pentium & XP has no problems. Problem is, all my media files are on the AMD.

This is completely assinine that this is not a recognized problem and that there is no fix yet!

Has anyone figured out why the problem with AMD and what we can do about it? You would think there would be an easy fix, some basic files missing perhaps? C'mon Apple!

Alright. I signed up just to try to get more information out.

My Computer: eMachines T3092

AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 2.17 GHz

Running Windows XP SP2

Does not play mp3 files on itunes 10.5, will play m4a.

Downstairs Computer: HP a6357c

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ 2.60 GHz 32 bit

Running Windows Vista

Does play mp3 files on itunes 10.5

Is it...not AMD? Im not really too swell at computer knowledge, but this isnt meshing. Is this only AMD on XP that wont run it? Because Im sort of flustered and getting a new computer and dont want to buy an AMD processor that wont play my mp3 files over itunes..

Shaiza, AMD is "the other" !

SSE2, Streaming SIMD Extensions 2, is one of the Intel SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data) processor supplementary instruction sets first introduced by Intel with the initial version of the Pentium 4 in 2001. It extends the earlier SSE instruction set, and is intended to fully supplant MMX. Intel extended SSE2 to create SSE3 in 2004. SSE2 added 144 new instructions to SSE, which has 70 instructions. Rival chip-maker AMD added support for SSE2 with the introduction of their Opteron and Athlon 64 ranges of AMD64 64-bit CPUs in 2003.

I'm having the same problem. I have two computers - my main PC and a laptop. All of my music is stored on the main PC; music that was legitimately purchased from the iTunes Store and from Amazon MP3. Both computers have the latest version of iTunes. Ever since my upgrade to 10.5, my mp3 files sound like **** when played through iTunes on my PC. If I share the library and stream the music to my laptop, the music sounds fine. My PC, where I'm having the problem, has an AMD processor. My laptop has an Intel.

I'm attending grad school online and up until now I've been using iTunes heavily while I work on my PC, and now my music sounds like crap! D:

Come on, Apple, it's not like AMDs are obselete. I won't be giving Apple any more money until they fix this. No, not even that - if they just acknowledge the problem and tell us that a fix is forthcoming, even that would be acceptable to me.

Oddly enough, I couldn't find those settings in my Import Settings for MP3s.

Regardless.

I went to the Apple Store because I wasn't getting anywhere with phone support.

The Genius there told me that the Apple communities are watched and read by Apple and they are probably looking into the issue; but he didn't really know for sure if they are aware of this issue or doing anything about it.

Even he couldn't report it directly to them.

I just think it would be great if there was some sort of official feedback from Apple:

1) Informing us that they are aware of the situation

2) That an update to resolve the issue is forthcoming

This 2nd-hand hearsay stuff is lame and I can't put faith in it.

The Genius also told me the only thing I could do was wait.

We've been waiting for weeks now.

That's weeks that I haven't been able to play music in iTunes or sync my iPod, of fear that it would corrupt the music on it as well.

I can wait, but am I waiting for nothing?

It should be noted that iTunes updates and the like usually come out on Fridays.

I saw a QuickTime update today and hoped it would fix the issue: it didn't.

Guess I'll wait for the "supposed" update scheduled for next week.

This is depressing and sad.

Does anyone know how to fix itunes not working at all issue? I updated to 10.5 on my Win XP PC and my ipod wouldn't sync, I unisntalled, reinstalled, restored and nothing. Now I cannot even play music in iTunes itself. I've done the reinstall 3x now. I'm not a happy camper. I read a lot of complaints w/ the 10.5 and Win XP. I can't do anything w/ my ipod b/c there's nothing on it now.

MercuryComet has "The Answer" on page 4 of this issue moenyc :

(Warning - all libraries and playlists must be rebuilt using this method):

  1. Copy My Music/iTunes folder to a safe location
  2. Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - Uninstall iTunes
  3. Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - Uninstall QuickTime
  4. Run CCleaner Registry Cleaner and restart (recommended)
  5. Download iTunes 10.4 from FileHippo.com (http://www.filehippo.com/download_itunes_32/10448/)
  6. Run iTunes installer
  7. Import music file containing mp3s (iTunes - File - Add File to library)
  8. Test playback of file.
  9. Download Quicktime 7.6 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL762)
  10. Run QuickTime Installer
  11. Restore the files you saved in Step 1. Create & Copy folders from back-up file to the following folders.
  • Automatically Add to iTunes
  • Books
  • Downloads
  • Mobile Applications
  • Music
  • Podcasts

Restart iTunes and you should be back in business. If your iPhone is iOS 5, you will need to refrain from syncing until Apple sorts this out.

The above approach is worst case.

I thought I would give you an update on where I am with this issue.

I have now spoken with a number of people and I am in direct contact with a very helpful engineer.

We have done a number of tests and I have sent log & audio files. This matter has now be escalated.

There is no indication of fix time or what priority it is on the list but at least it's in the system.

Ref the no "offical" responce. Although Support do monitor these forums they don't pass offical comment.(Remember how long it took for Apple to be forced to make a "problem" statement .... only once .... iPhone 4 dropping signal.

Hopefully our worries will be over soon and tunes will return to our ears .... and my lovely "telephone" will return to actually do something more than make phone calls.

Just signed up so I could add one more name to the list of troubled users. I (like probably many, many users) never thought of searching for this issue; I'm sure it's second nature to most of you who post, but I am pointing this out because maybe Apple doesn't realize how many people are trying to figure out why their iTunes "broke" but aren't represented on these kinds of posting sites.

Anyway, thanks to all for the commentary and I'll now try Mercury Comet's reversion to 10.4 and wait for the fix.

Like many of you, I can't believe Apple isn't at least acknowledging this and either rushing a fix or giving a public warning about upgrading.
