Q: Updated to iTunes 10.5 today and now my Audio Playback IS TERRIBLE!!! HELP!!!!

I am a Windows XP user, have never had ANY issues with audio playback using iTunes. Today I updated to iTunes 10.5 and the audio playback through my computer speakers is TERRIBLE. It sounds like finger nails running down a chalk board. Windows Media Player and EVERY other audio-playback-capable program on my computer works fine. iTunes is my program of choice since I have everything painstakingly cataloged and tagged using iTunes. Anyone have n e advice? I truly have no idea, and I have adjusted every sound setting imagineable but it makes no difference.

Windows XP, HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like you could be on to something with the VIA connection. I have an old desktop with a VIA chipset (AC97 audio) and I have the same problem you're describing. XP SP3 as well. It's just my VBR mp3s; apple lossless that I ripped myself with qaac plays just fine. Quicktime and foobar2000 are working fine, too.

So I was playing around with my computers and found out that this issue isn't caused by a VIA audio controller.

However, it may still be VIA related...

I swapped the sound cards in two of my systems. One card had a VIA controller (having issues) and the other had a Creative controller (not having issues). After the swap, the card with the VIA controller worked, but the card with the Creative controller didn't.

Now I've have another question to ask for those having problems with the audio in iTunes 10.5. Do you have a VIA chipset on the motherboard? Does your motherboard take an AMD processor? The two computers I have that are experiencing this issue have both AMD processors and VIA chipsets.

As for my other systems, which don't suffer from this issue, they have Intel processors and chipsets.

Having the same problem after updating to iTunes 10.5. Running XP Home Edition SP3 tried Microsoft updates no help. Seems to be happening with MP3 files. Import MP3's and try to play them and they sound horrible. Tried to covert them to ACC files using iTunes no help. Apple needs to fix this!!!!!

Only the "Purchased" music will play correctly.  Any music currently on your PC wont, this includes "Radio" - sounds choppy / high pitched - horrible.

DeadRunner, I looked up the specs for your ASUS motherboard and see that you have a nVidia chipset. Today I installed iTunes on a fifth computer, this one using an AMD 64 Athlon X2 processor and a nVidia chipset. No problem with the audio there.

Judging by the motherboard specs left by you and others, I'm starting to think that it has something to do with the AMD XP processor.

This doesn't appear to be a hardware problem, it's a bug of itunes 10.5!! Even quicktime works fine with my mp3's in the same computer, stop switching soundboards please, this is a sofware BUG!! Apple please correct this ASAP

yeah, AMD XP processors seem to be the common thread, though I thought I might have read in another thread about a user on a Mac that was affected, but I'm not sure.

Has anyone been able to make contact with APPLE and get any kind of response that they are aware of the problem and are working on a fix? This support community is more like self help and I wonder if APPLE even looks at our posts. I can tell that they surely do not have any input or responses.
