ITUNES 10.5 refuses to install on Windows Home Server

I have itunes running on my Windows Home Server (not the new VAIL version), I use this setup to "serve" my itunes library to my mobile devices, a setup that works quite well actually.

Unfortunately the just released 10.5 version of itunes refuses to install on the WHS, it tells me that errors have been found before itunes could be configured.

I have made sure no itunes was running, I tried several times, also with the ituneshelper application killed. I also tried installing in a completely different directory, behavious is the same.

Anyone ?

itunes-OTHER, Windows 2000, (WHS is windows 200 based)

I can confirm that the techniques from the link above work w/ a minor modification...

Steps to complete the iTunes 10.5 install:

1. Open Apple Software Update from your Start menu -> All programs

2. Click the check box next to iTunes 10.5 to select it only (deselect all other checkboxes at this time).

3. In the Tools menu of the Apple Software Update program select "Download Only"

4. After the download completes, re-open the Tools menu in the Apple Software Update program and select "Open Downloaded Updates Folder..."

5. The iTunes.msi file should be in that folder, move (not copy) it to a place you can access it from another windows computer (one of the shared folders on your WHS).

6. Follow the link in step two to download and install the MS software development kit so you can edit the .msi file.

7. Follow step 3 except instead of editing the "AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi" file you are going to edit the iTunes.msi file

8. Follow step 3c to delete the line that checks for operating system and version.

9. Move the iTunes.msi file back to its original location (not sure this step is necessary, but hey, why not?).

10. Double-click the edited iTunes.msi file to run it and install iTunes 10.5.

11. When prompted to re-start, do so. When WHS reboots and you log in, iTunes 10.5 is installed and ready for use!

Here's the link again, just in case:

Good luck!

Thanks a lot ! This solves the issue !

Note however that the launchcondition statement needs to be removed from both itunes.msi and applemobiledevicesupport.msi. For previous versions applemobiledevicesupport would just error out but installation of itunes would continue. It seems that as of 10.5 applemobiledevicesupport.msi has become a must-install.

I can confirm that this procedure works for iTunes 10.6.1.7 as I just performed it successfully. I edited both the iTunes.msi & AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi as you suggested in your Oct. 13th post, so that the OS check is removed, launched the iTunes.msi file and it installed without problems!

To be clear, skip step 1 (and all its sub-steps) from the goolier page if you are performing the procedure on an iTunes update since the files will already be in their .msi forms, not in an .exe (like they would be in a new install).
