iPhone 4 stuck on "connect to iTunes" after failed update

In anticipation for iOS 5 I thought I'd check my phone and update to the latest available fw (4.3.5?) but during the update, I got an error message telling me the update had failed (can't remember the error code unfortunately) and now the phone is stuck on the "connect to itunes" screen (the one with the usb cable pointing to the iTunes icon. Problem is, iTunes doesn't recognize that the phone is connected so I'm completely stuck.

I've tried everything suggested on the relevant support page: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1538 and nothing works. iTunes refuses to recognize the phone.

I did two things and now the phone is recognized by iTunes and I'm currently in the process of restoring it.

1. Disabled real-time protection in Microsoft Security Essentials

2. Ran iTunes as Administrator (right-click -> Run as administrator)

MSE has never, ever interfered with iTunes before so I'm guessing it was "Run as administrator" that did the trick.
