My computer clock keeps resetting itself. I have replaced the PRAM battery with a brand new one and I still am receiving this error message. What else could be going on?
Make sure the battery is in correctly and well seated, restart, reset date and see what happens.
Reset the mother board and PRAM.
If still having problems, make sure the new battery is good... stock on those don't always rotate well depending on where you bought it
If that does not help, post back.
after a fresh boot up you will hear the main system chime, press Apple key + option + P + R.
hold until you hear a lower tone system chime, then release keys. this info is listed in the PowerMac G4 manual in troubleshooting.
I recall when I was solely Mac OS9 at my old job our Mac Tech would often have us zap PRAM sometimes 7 times in a row as well as rebuild desktop. luckily OSX doesnt need as much coddling.
If the clock still doesnt keep, either the PRAM battery you put in there is still bad or its an indication of a larger problem.
I have tried resetting the PRAM- I still get the error message.
What is strange is that this problem occurred directly after I removed a PCI card. I tried replacing this PCI card, and I am no longer prompted to reset the time.
Any idea why the addition of a PCI card would have this effect? Could this be a problem with the MOBO?
The card was already installed, working fine. To troubleshoot another issue (I cannot export video from my Canopus ADVC300), I removed all PCI cards. All 4 slots are used. After I removed the 4 PCI cards, my Mac started losing time. I then replaced the PRAM battery and reset the PRAM. This didn't solve the issue. When I put the other 3 PCI cards back in, nothing happened as well. When I put the Sonnet Tempo SATA back in, the computer started retaining the time. Unfortunately, I the computer is not retaining the time anymore- even with all 4 PCI cards installed. How do you reset the MOBO?
There is a small grey button on a silver square along the edge of the MOBO, location varies slightly with board. I think mine is along the edge where the PCI card slots are.
I did reset the MOBO, still didn't work. So I went out and bought two more batteries, in the hope that I had purchased a battery that did not work initially. Fortunately, my computer is keeping time again with the new battery. Thanks for your help
