I'm attempting to hook up my iMac to my Linksys wireless router, however whenever I attempt to enable security settings on the network, I lose my internet connection and the I have limited connectivity. It works fine on an open network, but no matter what I tried it hasn't worked. I know the password is correct. I'm using a hex password for security, just so you know. Any suggestions.
On none Apple Wireless equipment any WEP key has to be prefixed with a $ sign, so if your using a WEP key like me make sure you have the dollar symbol before the hex key and you'll be sorted.
I'm using a WEP 40/128-bit hex password, and I wasn't able to type the dollar sign ($) when I tried the enter the password in Internet Connect. Is this something I need to try when I set the initial password. Any help would be great.
Did you really mean internet connect? If so, that's your problem. That's for dialup passwords. To set up your router, go in as the admin via a browser and set things up there in the router itself. Then the first time you try to connect via airport it will ask you for the password via a popup window. Enter it and you should be good to go.
The router is actually set up, using my PC, I just need to connect to the router that is already set up, but I keep getting that limited connectivity thing, whenever I enable security on the router.
Ok, this is the statement I get from my network settings in system preferences, "Airport is connected to the network <network name>. Airport has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet." I do not know how to fix this specifically. Is this something I simply need to adjust in my router setup, or a setting on my airport.
I apologize for not understanding everything, as wireless networking is still sort of new to me.
Hi, David. No problem. MAC addressing is nothing to do with Macs. Even a PC has a MAC, which stands for Media Access Control. That's the unique address of a particular computer, and it's a common way of restricting access to your network to set it up so that only the MAC addresses of your own computers can join the network. I was checking to see if maybe you'd set this up and then only entered your Windows computer's address.
