Itunes 10.5 robot sound

Just updated to 10.5 getting nasty robot sound. Windows 7 SP1 SoundMax integrated digital audio. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, turned off itunes EQ, also, reset audio driver and toggled default format in audio driver. still not working. Youtube, VLC media player, and Audacity works.

I'll confirm the library problem with respect to downgrading.

When upgrading to 10.5 the iTunes library file (.itl suffix) will also be upgraded and it will not function with older versions of iTunes. iTunes will not launch and gives an error message about the later version of the library. You need to run a disk search for the library file and delete it and allow the program to create a new one. As a result you will have to drag your music in again and re-create your play lists.

I had a copy of 10.4 saved and after cleaning up all of the bits and pieces left around the hard drive by 10.5, I installed 10.4 and it is running fine.

FWIW, the streaming radio stations also sound like a badly tuned radio station, so this is within iTunes itself and not anyone's sound card.

It sounds to me like a codec problem.

Having (reluctantly) done the whole downgrading iTunes process, the one good thing I noticed was that in \My Documents\My Music\iTunes there was a folder named "Previous iTunes Libraries".

User uploaded file

I deleted the exisiting iTunes Library.itl file created when I upgraded to 10.5, and moved/renamed the file from the Previous Itunes Libraries Folder. This worked on 10.4.1 and the music played correctly.

The downside was that the downgraded version doesn't recognise the iPhone/iPod with iOS 5 and prompts you to upgrade, so you can't sync.

I'm patiently waiting for a fix but it's very annoying as I miss my music on the journey to and from work!

Me too. I find that about 3/4 of the songs in the library sound like "The Chipmunks on acid with an alien back-up band"......HORRIBLE ! I see one of the replies mentions that songs purchased through the store work...I thin I have discovered the same thing. After I upgraded (after multiple notices to do so....next time "NOT"), I synced my iPhone and iPad and all songs seem to work fine on those devices. I use iTunes more as a tool, since I am a musician. Fortunately, everything seems to work OK using Winamp, so at least I can work with that and that also tells me that my sound card is not bad or there is something wrong with my computer.

I understand that problems can come up and I am usually forgiving. Today I don't feel quite that way. I wasted much of my weekend, uninstalling, troubleshooting, tried downgrading only to have the problem with the library not to work, etc, etc.......uuuughh!

The most frustrating thing of all.....how do you contact a person, or at least get an e-mail address, so you can report it...and hopefully get the instructions on how to fix this? I have invested a lot into this stuff (iPhone, iPad) to use as support tools.....with the main purpose of using iTunes on my PC.

Anyone know how to contact a "real" person that could provide assistance ??

I also had this problem. I could not play tunes either on the PC speaker or via AirPlay correctly. How annoying (both the sound and the issue!)

I rolled back to 10.4

This works for me because the machine that has the issue, I use to serve music to my Airplay and AppleTV, I don't need it to sync with iPhone. (Have another machine for that)

I heard 10.5.1 is in the works. Hope that fixes it.

Just funny that I upgraded 4 machines (2 Win7, 2 WinXP) only one had the problem. (The one that failed is AMD, the others Intel)

  1. What should apple do now? Apple should rollback current itunes software version 10.5 to the previous version 10.4. It is the responsible thing to do. I know Apple is working hard to resolve but in the meantime untold number of people are installing this 10.5 flawed version. If this is not possible due to technical reasons, then it should stop future downloads of this version.
  2. What should Apple do in the future? It should redouble their software quality control effort. It is important to user test all new software, using all possible configurations. Only fully tested software should be released to the world.
  3. Lesson Learned: This type of software error is not acceptable for this great company. Steve Jobs, rest his soul, would be the first to say so.
